Spring Break

My fellow Americans: I have excellent news. We have a spring break destination! Initially, I had planned to take the country to Florida, as is traditional.

However, following guidance from local officials, we were advised to cancel the planned trip:

“Miami mayor warns Florida is already packed for spring break with too many people on the way: 'We've got a problem'”


While at the airport, waiting in line to try to re-book flights, I started chatting with the friendly Polish fellow who was standing next to me.


It was none other than Gus Polinski!


It turns out that his flight was cancelled. We waited in line together, and after a few hours with no forward progress we decided that a new plan is in order: We can take his van to Canada. While it won’t be quite the same weather, Canada has a lot to offer. With short notice, I was able to secure lodging at Yellowknife, North Western Territories.

We’ll spend the whole week here – maybe longer! There will be many exciting activities available.

The historic Old Town of Yellowknife still features glimpses of the excitement that prevailed during the “dirty thirties.” It was an era when miners constructed wooden shacks, pitched tents. Other interesting sights include Latham Island and Peace River Flats. You can see beautifully preserved old log buildings and shacks that are hidden among the more modern buildings.

In order to get a complete feel of the vintage atmosphere here, you can take a leisurely walk along the Ragged Ass Road. The shoreline of the Old Town features tours, fish outfitters and a number of eateries. Visitors can also take a ride in one of the numerous float planes that will take them on fishing trips.

Itinerary:
We started our trip this morning, following Poland to Manitoba. This evening, we will start our drive into Saskatchewan. Tomorrow morning, we'll be heading into Northwest Territories, and hopefully reach our destination by mid afternoon.
