When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money
Exactly comrade, exactly.
What good is socialism... when there is nobody else's work to exploit?
^ That's only the case because market employment is dead, bludgeoned to death by the twin forces of socialist ideology and military necessity.
And by socialist ideology, I mean the now-popular conception of joining a commune over market employment.
eh, MikeBane has never been a major advocate of ingame communes.
I assumed this article was a reference to the RL free market, and responded accordingly

Mike has advocated for communes, just not as much as I have 😛
You can buy the goats.
enough cash buys enough guns to make sure you eat the last goat 😉
What good is socialism when the people realize that if they slack off, others have to make up their lack of work, and they can't be fired for it. Also their is no reward for their work, so no incentive to work harder. Eventually, you get a system that resembles the old USSR, where no one works if it's avoidable, and, as a result, there isn't enough to provide for the workers, because the bosses siphon off what money is brought in. Eventually the system collapses like the house of cards it is.
^ You're talking about one of the theoretical problems known to communism, in socialism there is still incentive to "move up" in the world. The levels of income distribution may not be as disgustingly distorted as with capitalism, but perhaps the incentive could also be more leisure time and little bonuses here and there for exceptional work ethic.
Socialism is happening, and the world will continue to shift towards it as resources become less and less abundant (thanks to the "too much is never enough" mentality of capitalism) and man labor gets replaced with machinery. Capitalism is slowly killing itself, and people complain that governments are becoming more strict, but they have no choice at this point, because the ignorance of humanity in the past leaves us no other future but a more restrictive one (such as population control as well)
Lastly though, I wouldn't use the USSR as an example of Socialistic failure. People will do the same with Capitalism once the US falls. Fact is, the USSR collapsed thanks to excessive spending and poor foreign policies during the cold war, which they lost (Afghanistan being the final straw leading to the collapse). The US is entering a cold war with China at the moment, shifting its fleet to the Pacific. It's a cold war the US doesn't have enough money to win, and along with losing influence in the world through the UN (see: not being able to invade Syria) this will all lead to its eventual collapse.
The US can't invade Syria because it doesn't want to get embroiled in a war...
I don't agree. They've recently invaded (or "intervened" in) Libya. They're trying to gain influence and replace the government with one that will hold better relations with the US. They wanted to intervene immediately in Syria, but were denied by a UN vote. (Thanks to Russia and China) Syria is in a bad place right now, but the US can thank their policies of the last decade for being denied the ability to "intervene", whether its needed or not.
US would be ignoring Russia and China if Syria had enough oil.
I agree mostly but i don't think China is "alone". You should consider BRICS countries, they control almost 50% of the worlds resources.
Also, main focus of the Arms industry is on the weapons to control the population and not to wage wars with other countries. This should be also considered.
When was the last time you heard new bomb was invented? Focus is on drones, stun grenades, tear gas....
Paddy, this isn't reality; the barriers to socialism in eRepublik differ from those in reality.
"Invaded"? I think to constitute an invasion you have to land a reasonable land force in the territory, the UN just stopped Gadaffi from using his air force from bombing the rebels
Which is why i said "intervened". The US had men on the ground in Libya, training Libyan rebels and fighting alongside them out of uniform. It's an invasion by the same standard I think the Bay of Pigs was an American invasion.
@Raven Having agents on the ground inciting rebellion and training rebels is still not really the same as invading. It's more in the category of sabotage and covert ops.
I know it's not technically an invasion by definition. I'm only using the term to draw a comparison. The goal of government influence is the same in both attacks, invasion or covert. The government only covers their own back from the media by going covert, but it shouldn't be ignored for what it really is. That's all I'm getting at.

Money is irrelevant.
Happiness is everything.
Unfortunatly we live in a world where it isn't like that. I hope that will change until my life ends. I want people to feel the happiness.

Another version of the bear problem.
Q. How fast do you need to run to get away from a hungry bear?
A. Faster than the other guy.
When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
