Everyone wondered where they are ...
No one could find them ...
They strike from nowhere ...
The story of the German U-Boats and the Commander of the Kriegsmarine, Grand Admiral Karl Donitz.

1939.
War starts.
German industry starts producing a mass of 17 U-Boats / Month.
Donitz knew that the key in winning the war in Europe is to control the Atlantic.

14 February 1939
The Bismarck is launched. Donitz opposed the Bismarck project from the very beginning telling the Fuhrer that "He can build must more U-Boats, with much better efficiency" - and he was right.

But what we discuss today it's Donitz's Secret Project :
U-BOAT Type 21

After discussing with scientists, Donitz's conclusion is sure : The U-Boat Type 21 will cut the ally supply to England, if it arrives on time.

Based on the famous german Diesel/Electric design the Type 21 was more hydrodynamic. Could carry more armament (6 × 53.3 cm (21 in) torpedo tubes and 23 torpedoes)
The german engineers come with a design of an engine that doesn't need the submarine to go to surface.
Donitz is impressed.

Hitler thought of it as a sea "Wunderwaffe". But it wasn't a Wunderwaffe, it was just a better organisation, and better design.
The Type 21 was by far over all ally submarines, and it was the prototype for the Nautilus (the first nuclear powered submarine).

118 Pieces of Type 21 arrived in 1945 (out of 1120 planned), 3 entered active service.
When Donitz because President of Germany, he ordered all Type 21's to be destroyed. Only 86 were destroyed, the rest have fallen in ally hands.
