I loved you once
When we drank and smoked, coffee and cigarettes
and you talked to me … Gypsy Romanian.
You would leave work at five o’clock
and rush to meet me at five o’ three.

I loved you at once
and knew you would be mine
from the first moment of the new year
When we rolled together in someone else’s
entry hall… dotted rug.

I once loved you
Then I looked out above the streets
holding your waist and promised you the city.
I would have given it to you, if I could.
I wanted you to have it.

Once when I loved you
We mostly laughed.
I cried at movies, touching your heart.
You laughed at how involved I got
grabbing at your arm.
 
I loved your family
mostly. For I needed to belong and they made a place for me. And
we shared Christmas wafers while generations
accusingly sang in my ears.
They loved me too, mostly. Mostly they loved you happy, once
when you were happy.

You loved me once
your eyes were joyous, your mocking faint and
you knew my fears and loved me anyway.
I made you happy then, once.
Then we were locked, your ankles weightless on my shoulders.

I loved you once,
Once when I loved you.

Whose Sky Hero is that? I think I know.
Its owner is quite happy though.
Full of joy like a vivid rainbow,
I watch him laugh. I cry hello.

He gives his Sky Hero a shake,
And laughs until her belly aches.
The only other sound's the break,
Of distant waves and birds awake.

The Sky Hero is Shiny, Hard to Get and deep,
But he has promises to keep,
After cake and lots of sleep.
Sweet dreams come to him cheap.

Trashing days that go,
in homes and not it snow,
over the top we go,
sighing all the way,

Bells that never ring,
making spirits low,
what fun it not, to stay at home
on a chair with just a grin. ohhhh
