Winter Writing Olympiad - Why am I here?

Day 5,212, 11:06 Published in USA USA by Harvey R Specter

Dear reader,

Today I write to you in a very different context than I have in the past. Truth be told... I haven't written an article in years and it has been mostly motivated by the simple fact that I have not been here.

You know what they say: Real Life takes over, responsibilities and all that, not to mention our own daily struggles. But I'm not here to write about my past uh... 8 years of RL.

I'm here to talk about these two topics:

1. Why do I play erepublik.
2. The greatest thing I've ever done in this game.

So without further delay... I'll get started!!

Why do I still play erepublik?

I believe the correct question in my case would probably be "Why did I return?"

Back in the day, my biggest motivation was to have fun and to serve this eCommunity that embraced an asshole like myself. Don't get me wrong, I'm still an asshole and will probably always be one but after all these years I learned that things tend to be and go a lot better when you’re a “friendly asshole”.

In a previous eLife in a previous erepublik account that I no longer use (I can’t remember its password or anything), I served the community in many offices, ranging from Foreign Affairs, Cabinet, Congress and at one point as General of the old Air Force. I worked with many prominent names that have been around for many many years.

Among the reasons for my return to an explicitly much deader game than it was almost a decade ago is the same one that motivated me to join in the first place: To serve and to have fun, but also… to review old friends.

But why would an “asshole” like me would want to review old friends? It’s natural that we all like to see how people we used to get along with are and I’m no exception to that rule. However, I did learn one important lesson along the way:

“Sometimes, the people who were your worst enemies at one point, have the potential to become your best friends tomorrow.”

I learned that when I ran against Haliman for AMP Party President many years ago. We despised each other and at the time, it sorta split the party for a time. Obviously those were different times but that was how it went but… somewhere between months to a year later, in a different game, me and Haliman ran into each other. At first there was some distrust but we learned to trust one another and we actually developed a friendship that lasted many years.

This incident alone taught me that important lesson and the more I look into it, the more I realize I’d rather have friends than make people my enemies. This regardless of whatever petty ePolitics that get in between.

So there you go, my biggest motivations are related to serving, having fun, reviewing old friends and I am also looking forward to making new friends and working with you all!!

The greatest thing I've ever done in this game

This one is a very tough one to respond to and highly subjective too as it may be difficult to dissociate the greatest things I’ve done from the worst mistakes I made during my tenures in my past eLife.

There was a time where I wore far too many hats and well, as the saying goes “when you wear too many hats you tend to lose one”. This was probably one of my biggest mistakes: being too eager to serve without respecting my own limits.

It’s a mistake I don’t plan on doing again, so my level of commitment will be proportional to the time I have available. Another mistake of mine was to make enemies too quickly for being way too opinionated or not very tolerant of the trolls that lurked around back then, which may have cost me an election or two.

As for my greatest accomplishments in this game… I’d probably go for organizing the ATO efforts to remove the Serbian PTO from the AMP. I was Secretary of Homeland Security (I’m not sure if that is even a thing anymore as I’ve heard we’re cool with Serbia nowadays) and both me and many other cabinet members of the time worked for an entire day to recover AMP from the hands of the Serbian Free_Area and to drive Ajay outta there. We succeeded and I felt I had once again fulfilled my duty as I have done many times throughout my entire eCareer.

I could carry on with my past accomplishments and the many more I still have to accomplish or the things I still have to learn but I don’t want to bore you all to death.

So without further delay, I hope to see you all around!

Special final thanks to Paul Proteus for helping me with this awesome banner and to Melissa Rose for putting up with me for so long!

Thank you everyone and kind regards,
