Where have all the programmers gone?

Day 3,556, 03:58 Published in Ireland Ireland by Releasethe Krakken

At first I thought all those eRepublik clones was just unoriginal game companies. You take most of the game mechanics do some graphics slap some code in it target the customer base of the original game .

But then I realized this is far bigger than the few amateur hour clones of erepublik.
A few months ago I installed a mobile game by erepublik which was quite annoying because all you did was upgrade stuff. Upgrade this upgrade that build this etc etc.i cannot mention games of the 90's yes you upgraded stuff but inbetween upgrading there was actual gameplay.

Ok so no biggie I guess after upgrading everything you eventually get to actual gameplay. I assume because after upgrading about the 50th building I quit the game.

Then I was playing this week other games on my mobile that ofc as with most involved watching the occasional ad usually of other games. So I saw a familiar game that I used to play that involved a lot of gameplay. Downloaded it and it was an exact clone of the erepublik offering exact city layout exact plot upgrade this upgrade that blah blah blah. Strange that and then I wanted to get 297 items in the game and I downloaded a second game this is one that is heavily advertised usually by a famous actor. And weirdly this game was again an exact clone of the others or are they an exact clone of him same layout same upgrade upgrade upgrade.

So somewhere there must be a place that game companies go to buy templates of games because I assume that actually developing your own games is a bit expensive and too great of a risk 🙁

Which is kinda sad if you think about it. Because I assume they get most of the code as well they probably only splash their logos on the games and put teams in place to manage the game. Sad so sad if game companies start lacking imagination.

Even sadder when you consider they cant even buy games with good gameplay. And that actual good games is also cloned. Mine offers donkeys and bulls and sombrerors and crap. Yous till charge a castel but is in mexico hombre or meh

But then again when last did everyone say Plato was full of imagination.

Meh: lets just send junior to the game shop to buy us a game. Ok lets see where we can make money in this game by what we call recurring cash loops.Draw circles over the loops and make plop plop sounds .

Yes Plato I assume when you started out this was where you wanted to end. The shoes salesman of game companies.

It has become all about money and not about gameplay. So sad.

in the old days, I remember they said that most game companies websites were almost sacrosanct for hackers because of the respect they had for game companies then. I wonder if this is still the case. whether hackers would respect a game company like erepublik or would they say meh: not worth the bother.

😛
