Battle of Eutaw Springs

The battle began when freshly reinforced Major General Nathanael Greene of the Continental Army continued his attack on British forces along the Santee River, in South Carolina. British troops initially fled leaving their breakfast at the table, which the patriots eagerly began eating. However the British counter-attack was fierce, and by the end of the battle 500 Americans lay dead or wounded while british forces lost ~700 more losses than any battle in the war.

However while this battle cemented American control in the south. I would like to focus on another part of the story, I want to tell the story of the man who would become Nathanael Greene

Nathanael Greene; A Man Lost To Time

Greene was born in Rhode Island in 1707 and became a farmer however in 1774 he helped form the Kentish Guards, a militia group. During this time he was working on improving himself by reading books on military tactics, tactics that would help him in the coming war.

Greene joined the Continental Army as a private and worked his way up the ranks eventually being assigned the city of Boston after England had abandoned it. He would continue to distinguish himself in multiple battles including the Battle of Trenton.
Battle of Trenton

By the time the war was over Greene had taken most of the southern cities besides a few coastal ones. He excelled in dividing, eluding, and tiring his opponent by long marches, and in actual conflict forcing the British to pay heavily for a temporary advantage, a price that they could not afford

Nathaneal was one of 3 generals other than Washington and Henry Knox who served in the army the entire 8 years of the war.Afterwards Washington offered his second in command the Secretary of War position twice which he refused.
Greene died in 1786 a financially poor man. He was buried in Colonial Park Cemetery of Savannah for 114 years, but was later moved to a memorial in Savannah.
