Leaders ~ Editorial

Today has been another hectic day as several other nations including Russia left PEACE. It becomes ever more apparent that the talk of a new Charter of PEACE will be without teeth as many of the strongest members have already left. This leaves PEACE nations and their departed allies in the position where they can reform into an entirely new alliance with perhaps different membership, a small club of elite aggressive nations or even remain completely independent. Due to the nature of MPPs, it is possible to do this. Spain has shown us that even in defeat advantages can be won, as MPPs are wiped and occupied territories used against an aggressor.

In Britain the political shake-up continues as the UKRP continue their decline and the FDP present two potential candidates for Prime Minister: Widdows9000 and Mahmoud Ibn Abdullah, a close friend of Aelar, the FDP player who dropped out last month. Widdows is the older and more experienced player, but without the backing of larger parties it is unlikely any FDP candidate will be successful. With the UKRP in decline and likely to back a home-grown candidate (possibly even the PP Winston), and the RFA likely to back their own candidate again, this opens up the possibility of an FDP-BEP alliance in the 5th December elections.

In addition the formation of a new political party, The Anarchist Cabal, formerly the GF World Domination Party, has raised eyebrows. Small parties have a poor chance of success in the eUK, with even the FDP (with many experienced members) failing to break into the top 5 more than 2 months after it was founded. The Anarchist Cabal is probably unconcerned by this however, considering their goal is to abolish government and redistribute power to regional councils. Also up for abolition are taxes, elitists and foreign wars. For the keen abolitionist, the Anarchists are for you.

Europe ~ Neutral is a dirty word

Despite being our closest neighbour, few UK citizens think of Ireland. This is because of its now-famous neutrality, and non-involvement in wars. Since the participation in US training wars however, the small island nation has become increasingly perceived as pro-US to PEACE countries around the world. It’s belligerent promise to fight Indonesia in Malaysia brought many a raised eyebrow as the UK (which is surrounded by foes) tentatively added yet another question mark to its list of so called neutral partner countries. Recently the Irish parliament (Dáil) passed a proposal to change the status of the country from ‘neutral’ to ‘independent’.

For Ireland this probably means that they can take a moral stance on foreign actions without worrying too much about sacrificing their precious neutrality. However to everyone else this means that they are now a stand-alone country with no allies. They rely on the friendliness of their two main neighbours – the USA and UK (from opposing alliances) to maintain their territorial integrity. But what do these two countries think of the changed status?

I would imagine the USA are happy with the situation: at present their alliance is not acting particularly imperialistically (though they have in the past). The UK is similarly unconcerned. The question is whether the other PEACE nations, feeling the pressure from EDEN nations, will see Ireland fighting for their enemies as an act of aggression. It is after all unlikely to be taken with a laid back “oh well if they’re not in an alliance it’s ok” attitude. It strikes me that any nation that is independent and will fight for territorial integrity will eventually manage to annoy almost all powerful nations. Because at some point all powerful nations violate the territorial integrity of someone!

We will just have to wait and see what Ireland does to resolve this apparent dilemma. My prediction is that they will face the lesser evil (for them) and join EDEN within the next few months.

USA ~ Respecting ones friends

The USA has talked for months about how the UK stabbed them in the back by signing a treaty with ancient enemies PEACE. Now once again we have seen history repeat itself as France signed a peace treaty with the USA, against the wishes of close allies Spain.

The USA closed the battle to try and engender closer relations with France. However the Spanish are convinced that France will never join EDEN, and that it is just a ploy to close a war where the USA had all the advantages. Spain claims it does not feel betrayed, only disappointed. However the publication of an article officially expressing this disappointment only goes to show the depth of the chasm opening up once again between the USA and EDEN- similar to the one which caused the original ATLANTIS alliance to fall apart earlier this year.

“From the Spanish Government, we strongly understand and respect that the USA wants to close war fronts, but we can not share this point of view and we can only express our disappointment in this decision. We think that closing a war which has 10 MPPS in favour is not the best move also without consulting nor respecting the wishes of allies like Spain or even the rest of EDEN who received the information once the decision was already taken. Respecting allies is not doing what allies want you to do, it is just a matter of respecting and understanding their decisons and points of view. Canada and the USA have just taken into account their own interests without thinking on that finishing this war can be against the interests of his allies in Europe. Taking decisions on your own could damage on a direct or indirect way to a fellow nation which does not make you a really good ally”*

*Accentuation authors own

We can see from this statement that the USA-Spanish relations have been severely strained. It is arguable that all that held EDEN and the North American countries together was the necessity of doing so to withstand PEACE. Will the USA abandon their allies in Europe now that the threat is away from their doorstep? Will Spain itself take a step back now it borders a more peaceful France? We will have to wait and see.
