Q2 Upgrades Analyzed

27 February 2012
Latest Admin Gold sink actually a good deal.
Before all the complainers arrive with their shouts of Plato and his insatiable Gold-snorting habits, take a moment to consider that this latest upgrade is actually a pretty decent offer. Or, well, some of it is.
Unfortunately, the "best bargain" is for those who spend Gold on training. But even for those who only do the Free training, the math will show that this deal can pay off.
The basic idea is that they have introduced Q level into the training facilities.
So what used to look like this:
Now looks like this:
As you see, any daily cost (or lack thereof) for training does not change.
Let's do the math:
Training Grounds
Daily Cost - 0 Gold
Q1 daily strength bonus - +5
Q2 daily strength bonus - +10
Gold cost of upgrade -20
Days to recover Gold -
Return on "investment" - .103 Gold/day
Assuming daily strength training with subsequent "Reward", Q1 Training yields a SS medal every 37 days exactly.
Upgrading to Q2, the SS medal will come roughly every 23 days.
In order to "make back" the 20 Gold, it will take 191 days.
After 191 days, you will have received 9 SS medals, or 45 Gold if you upgrade, wheras without the upgrade you will not have received 30 Gold until after 222 days (by which time you will have already earned your 10th SS medal)
If you have the Gold for this, do it. It is almost .1 Gold/day for 0 extra clicks.
*Each section has been edited after Pearlswine found an error in my original spreadsheet.
Climbing Center
Daily Cost - 0.19 Gold
Q1 daily strength bonus - +2.5
Q2 daily strength bonus - +5
Gold cost of upgrade -20
Days to recover Gold - 382
Return on "investment" - .052 Gold/day
It will take 382 days of training every single day in order to "recover" the gold you spend on this upgrade. It is the worst value of all of the Traning Facilities upgrades.
If you have the Gold, already spend the .19 daily for this training, and are not concerned about recovering this "investment", then upgrade. But if you run a tight budget and cannot afford a second 20 Gold upgrade then skip this one. Anyone considering this upgrade should do so ONLY after they have spent the 20 Gold upgrading their Training Grounds.
Shooting Range
Daily Cost - 1.49 Gold
Q1 daily strength bonus - +5
Q2 daily strength bonus - +10
Gold cost of upgrade -20
Days to recover Gold - 191
Return on "investment" - .103 Gold/day
The Shooting Range duplicates the math for the Training Grounds. However, here is the good news. This Training Facility used to be a terrible deal. It was 1.49 Gold/day for only +5 strength, and was by far the worst value among the facilities. It is still the worst deal after the upgrade, but much less so.
Also consider this: if you have been spending the 1.79 for the +10 strength in the past, with this upgrade you can now get the same +10 strength gain but spend .3 Gold less daily. Considering this added daily savings, those who choose to spend the 20G to upgrade the Shooting Range and start training here instead of at the Special Forces Center will recover their 20 Gold investment in just 51 days.
This upgrade is perfect for someone who can afford 2 upgrades and has only been using the Training Grounds and Special Forces training every day, or for someone who can afford 3 upgrades and has only been using the Training Grounds, Climbing Center, and Special Forces training every day. In other words, if you've been avoiding the Shooting Range in the past for budgetary reasons, it is time to reconsider.
Special Forces Center
Daily Cost - 1.79
Q1 daily strength bonus - +10
Q2 daily strength bonus - +20
Gold cost of upgrade - 20
Days to recover Gold - 104
Return on "investment" - .19 Gold/day
This is obviously the "best deal", but it mainly applies to those who can afford the daily cost associated with Special Forces Training.
Interestingly, the return on this upgrade essentially makes the Climbing Center training "free", so it is great news for those who spend gold freely.
Combined Training
All of the above calculations were made in isolation. In other words, using ONLY the specific upgrade in question plus the daily bonus. Here I will present the numbers for those who want to spend 80 Gold to upgrade all 4.
Accounting for daily training at all facilities plus the +1,+1,+1,+1,+5 bonus pattern, it will take 177 days to recover your 80 Gold.
In other words, for anyone who trains maximum Gold training every day, the 80 gold investment yields 0.452 Gold per day benefit, sheer profit starting on day 178. Most importantly, this daily return comes without costing any additional food clicks.
Be sure to check out the numbers on every possible combination in Enyavar's excellent analysis in The Meck-Pomm

that is clean and clear math.
thank you!
vs
this is limited time offer ?
Great work!
it doesnt say if its a limited offer, I asume it´s not.
In order to "make back" the 20 Gold, it will take 220 days.
After 220 days, you will have received 10 SS medals, or 50 Gold if you upgrade, wheras without the upgrade you will have received 30 Gold after 222 days.
Wait what?
Wouldn't it take 88 days to make back the 20 gold?
If it take 22 days to make SS each SS is 5 gold. 22*4=88. No? 5*4=20. Just curious. Nice article as always though.
clear expl thx
ALL competent articles on this topic will be featured in today's Pony Express.
Can you spell "competent"?
Serious business, people. I will make a segment of Training Grounds Upgrade articles. If you can spell your way out of a wet paper bag, then string together three sentences and add a photo.
Analyse it, praise it, condemn or troll it, just spell it right and publish it, and the Pony Express will boost your readership and subscriptions for you.
I'll be watching the Latest News rankings page for your submission.
chance ... 220 days gives 50 gold in medals but 30 gold of that you were already going to have made without the upgrade
@Chance
No. The reason it will take the full length of time is that you must compare how long it will take to make 20 MORE gold after the upgrade than you would have made without the upgrade. In other words, After 22 days of Q2 Training Grounds, you've got 5 Gold. But you will ALSO get the same 5 Gold 15 days later without spending the extra 20 Gold. So it will actually take 220 days before you will have made 20 MORE gold with Q2 than what you would have made with Q1.
I see this benefiting the invested players. I can't imagine that many newer or casual players will see the reward. 220 days in eRepublik is a long time for someone to commit. This certainly seems like something that the 1% will be interested in. The rest, probably not so much.
Excellent article as always. Even for new Citizens I would recommend these upgrades.

Isn't 1000 / 5 = 200? You gain an extra 5 strength a day and you need 1000 to get a medal, thus 200 days to get a return on the free training upgrade...
@Pearlswine
It isn't so cut and dried because of the additional training bonus you get for work/train.
whats the most profitable combination of training centers?
All maximum and BH hunting of course : P
Voted and thank you.
How so? That doesn't increase too. You only need to look at the marginal gain, not the overall rate.
Anyway using your method using just the strength gain from training, after 200 days you'd have gained 1000 strength and 4 medals. If you upgraded the free one you'd have gained 2000 strength and 8 medals. I'd double check your math. If you add in the daily reward assuming that you get an extra 9 strength every 5 days you get 360 extra strength in both scenarios, or an extra 1.44 medals.
So the base scenario you'd have 5.44 medals and with the upgrade you'd have 9.44 medals after 200 days. A difference of 4 medals / 20 gold.
Worth mentioning that the NE bonus and Friend bonus are no longer offered.
Great article!

I guess I'm just not getting the erepublik math here. If I were to upgrade all of my training facilities, and I train each of them daily, I will earn ~47 (45 base + daily bonus) Str per day at a cost of 3.47G. Sure, I'd earn a medal every ~4 days or so but at a cost of ~18.50g to earn the 5g medal. That's not even factoring in the 80g I spent to upgrade my facilities.
How can there ever be a positive financial ROI?
@Pearlswine
The reason it is not exactly 200 days is because the daily bonus does not double. So under the old system you would gain (using just the Training Grounds as the example) 25+9 or 34 strength every 5 days. Under the upgraded system you would gain 50+9 or 59 strength every 5 days. Because the daily strength bonus does NOT double under Q2, it is not exactly twice as much daily strength, thus the 220 days (and not 200) to recover your Gold.
No matter what Math use - everyone is loser.
@mccvii
There are two ways of seeing the ROI. If you never pay Gold to train, but upgrade the Free Training Center, you will see 0.0909 Gold/day ROI after day 220.
If you are ALREADY PAYING the Gold to train, the ROI is that your daily training will cost you 0.452 less each day than it did previously.
(34/5) Strength / day*200 days = 1360
(59/5) Strength / day*200 days = 2360
Difference over 200 days = 1000 strength.
A medal take 250 strength, 4 medals = 20 gold. It takes 200 days. Check your math.
@Pearlswine
You and I are addressing two different questions.
You are asking how many days fewer it will take to reach 20 Gold. Your answer to that question is correct.
However I am addressing the question of how many days it will take to make exactly 20 Gold MORE than you would have made without upgrading. The answer to that question is 220 days.
"Worth mentioning that the NE bonus and Friend bonus are no longer offered."
wait, does this mean that NE+friend bonus are no longer there, or are they just not doubled??
...........I'm a loser

Good strategy for widening the gap between the credit card heroes and casual players. Way to make this game more fun, Plato.
thanks here. I may translate it, can i?
Cya
If you upgrade the Training Grounds + the Climbing Center, your SS medals would pay for using the Climbing Center, since you'd spend about 3g total for every 250 STR you get between the Training Grounds, the Climbing Center, and the Daily Bonus.
An alternative for people who don't like having to obtain more gold to train.
OK I had to take care of some stuff at home, but after working with Pearlswine, and comparing his spreadsheet with mine, I've come to the realization that we were both a little off (he less so than I).
I've amended the figures above to reflect revisions to the Training Center, Climbing Center, and Shooting Range.
Good job, thanks

I wrote an extensive analysis for the new training numbers - article with tables and graphs.
Please find it here:

Thanks for the hard work. And FTW, Pearlswine!?! (It lives!)
I don't see any reason for a n00b to not invest the gold the game gives you in the q2 free training center. After the q5 town center this is one of the best uses of gold. Face it, this game is only good for one thing anymore, MEDALS, and most are military medals. Everything is centered around fighting, so you might as well just learn to live with it and go with the flow.
Excellent job, thank you! : )
vs
Im going with the climbing center either way I use it daily and only cost .19 gold so best bang for my gold esp geting 5 now. Already did the training center so overall good way to gain power quick.
Looks like good stuff. Way better than my goof-off article on the same subject:
http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-039-free-039-training-centre-upgrade-guide-for-the-warrior-cheapskate-1976444/1/20
It is important to only assess marginal gains from upgrading.
Buying an upgraded basic training centre does eventually pay back the purchaser (on day 200).
Buying upgraded anything else DOESN'T generate a profit for the player - it lowers the cost of increasing strength. The difference is important.
It is true that, with an upgraded basic and an upgraded climbing centre, you can keep training every day and see your gold increase. That is because you are using the gold you would have received anyway from the free training to subsidize your climbing centre. Fine if you want to do that, but that doesn't mean you aren't losing gold on the climbing centre training. You are.
It is better for newer guys looking to train fr sure.
I would suggest upgrading training grounds to q2 and getting a q1 climbing center and that would mean 12.5 str + 1 per day and + 9/week.
Therefore with the above,we have (training daily) = 96.5 str/week and means SS in around 18-20 days and means we spent 3.42 days assuming it took 20 days (though if 21 days = 289,I think itd be a round 16-18 dyas but Im taking it more so profit/SS wud be 1.6g min. and gaining str ant the spped u do I wont mind it tho recovering would take 16 or so SS aswell so itd mean some time but the str quick gain helps big time!

Excellent article. I did the math myself, and I decided to get a Q2 basic Training ground, if just for the super soldier medal. Lokking over it, it seems that Plato did the math, and I'll give him that.
