No SPAM!

Day 2,485, 16:12 Published in USA USA by BritSeelowe

Sometimes, as I while away time in my fox hole, I am humbled by the sacrifices made by civilians back home. Once, back in the day in the UK, for example, an adult was entitled to the following per week: 4 ounces bacon/ham, about 1/2 pound of minced beef, 2 ounces of butter, 2 ounces of hard cheese, 4 ounces of margarine, 4 ounces of cooking oil, 3 pints of milk, 8 ounces of sugar, 2 ounces of tea, and 1 single egg. Every 4 weeks, 12 ounces of candy was allowed, and, every 2 months, a pound of preserves.

Needless to say, with all of the sacrifices, I was appalled that SPAM was frowned upon as a subject for an article! First of all, SPAM has an honorable history! It was created in 1937 by Hormel foods! The name is not an acronym for Special Processed Army Meat - that is a myth. Ken Daigneau, a brother of a Hormel vice president, came up with the name as part of a contest netting him $100. Between 1941 and 1945, 100 million cans of SPAM were shipped abroad to feed hungry Allied troops!

By the end of that war, the Hormel Girls, a 60 member troupe, was entertaining soldiers across the land. The history continued rich traditions lasting over 75 years where the 7 billionth can was sold in 2007, but no. We cannot write about SPAM.

No matter that SPAM offers a variety of flavors and delectable recipes such as SPAM and Eggs or pancakes. No matter that this soldier often made SPAM quiche in college. No. We are simply to write and ignore the fact that an eArmy fights on its belly. I'm sorry, soldier. SPAM is not on the menu.
