My Take on being CP and what it entails
Tim_Holtz
Being Country President and the impact it makes is something very serious to consider. With recent events with our Current CP I thought I would write up what I consider to be the most important parts of being CP that while not often considered as big things can make or break a Presidential term.

Media
What makes you well known in a game like this is not only your deeds but your presence in the Media. When I say media I mean not only in-game articles, shouts and all that but also outside forms of communication.
Often you hear “we need more info” or “transparency plox”. This is generally the population of the country wanting to get a progress report. This however is often treated by CPs (including myself at times) as a chore and is getting in the way of you doing work for the nation. That is wrong.
As the CP you have an almost monopoly on the media in the country you are CP of (and sometimes even beyond). The Media is not only for giving out info but also changing the perceptions of the population to encourage goals which you are elected for. Take for example our wars with Indo. When the CP writes an article relating to it be it good or bad news it needs to be both understood by the population and motivational. Remember as CP you are responsible for your country being as successful as possible under the circumstances you have.
An unfortunate example is the current CP articles that are written, although somewhat motivational in a sense they are not unifying and often have political bias in them, even though you are very rarely elected by the vast majority you are the CP of all of your nation’s inhabitants. They also need to be understood that means written in a style that the population understands. This is where both in RL and the current CP fall down. Writing in a complex and verbose manner either makes yourself not very well understood by the population or gives off an air of arrogance or superiority. That’s not a unifying trait and as CP your ultimate goal is to improve the nation very very rarely is breaking up unity a way to do this.
Your attitude in written articles greatly impacts public opinion of you, and ultimately its how you will be remembered, as either a CP who made strides to make the nation better or a CP whose attitude broke bonds of friendship.
Wrap up of Media Do’s and Don’ts
Do
-Write Unifying articles appealing to the whole population.
-Be Motivational
-Write in a manner which makes you understood
Don’t
-Write in a manner which shows negative characteristics such as arrogance or superiority.
-Bring a downbeat attitude no matter the circumstances (you are the leader remember!)
-Misuse your monopoly on the media
-Treat updates as a chore
Management
How you manage your Cabinet, Time and ultimately Country is one of the most important aspects of being a CP. Certain styles of Management can be good under 1 CP and bad for another so I won’t be talking about micromanagement or any other style. What I will be talking about in regards to cabinet is your demeanour and how you treat them.
Your cabinet is an extension of yourself when it comes to eRepbulik. As The Ingame cabinet positions in the politics Tab have no functions they are merely decoration and a bit of info for other countries to see.
What this means is that every cabinet member should be functioning properly. They are literally a representative of you. When you assign someone to be Minister of Foreign Affairs you are saying “I, the Country President cannot do all Foreign Affairs work since I have numerous other jobs, thus this person acts in my stead”. That should mean what they do goes in line with what your policies are or what you have instructed them to do.
How do you get people to be on the same page as you? Treating them with trust and respect is the best way for a decent human being.
It’s as simple as that, treat your cabinet with respect and trust them, sure sometimes there is a bad egg but that doesn’t mean treat all of them with mistrust and disrespect. It’s a recipe for Disaster.
Time Management is also something which is very important as a CP in Australia. You are a leader among leaders in TWO. Without proactive and positive relationships with other leaders within TWO your military and even other goals will be much more difficult. Where does Time come into this? Most of our alliance is in Europe (8-9 hours behind Aus). That means you have be ready to be up at 2-3am to go to meetings, it’s the only reason we are currently (and indeed in Flatty’s first term) kicking Indo’s arse. This means you have to balance your time between being on MANY hours a day AND being up at ungodly hours to do meetings with allies.
How i feel Whenever i am CP
Experience
While there are instances of CPs being successful without having numerous months of cabinet experience they are in the single digit percentile of successful CPs.
What’s that in English?
You are almost guaranteed to be less successful in your role of CP without numerous months of Experience being Senior Ministers in Cabinet.
What’s a “Senior Minister”?
Minister of Defence, Foreign Affairs or dCP (if said dCP actually does stuff)
I recommend either 2-3 terms of very active roles in any of these positions or preferably all of them. When you become CP you need to have knowledge of all positions and knowledge of how you want things to be run. As we have seen this month with the Poland blocking debacle, a lack of knowledge while being in the big chair is potentially a massive problem. Be honest with yourself as well, being a minister in a cabinet and being inactive and not doing your job actively is not getting experience in that role.
Odds and Sods
This is covering a few little things that aren’t big enough for their own topic.
Activity
Be online many many hours a day, if you don’t have that much time to commit then don’t run for CP, remember your job is to improve the nation, not being around and letting things fall into disrepute isn’t fulfilling that job.
Personal Issues
Sure things can crop up that are unexpected but if you know something will happen or that you have other commitments that will encroach on your month as CP then you seriously need to consider not running. Sure it’s a game but you are volunteering for a time intensive job, if you aren’t on enough then you won’t do a good job, remember your job is to lead the nation to greener pastures.
Final notes
Being CP isn’t just a political office, Medal and a powerful position. It’s becoming the person who leads and shapes the destiny of the nation for a whole month. That’s a big responsibility even in smaller nations. Wars, the economy and the welfare of the citizens are put into your hands, and it’s a heavy burden.
I’ll be honest with you, when I first became CP, for 1-2 days I did literally nothing, I knew I was supposed to be doing stuff but it’s harder than just doing it, if you have the correct mindset a Minister and CP are completely different roles. Instead of looking at 1-2 things, everything including the domestic situation is completely up to you.
That’s why I firmly think that not everyone can be a successful CP, however you can’t truly know if they will be good or not until they have done it.
Cheers

FIRST TIMMY
Voted, but needs more MoJo. Oh well TIMMY WHEN WE GO TO vLAND?!
hopefully soon, when it starts up
Hasn't it been "starting up" for years now? vPop Prime has been advertised since Binda was CP.
Voted. 🙂 Very well written and a lot of very good points made. Nice one, Tim. o7
Don't have a cabinet of yes men or you will never know if anything is wrong until people start writing nasty articles about you.
i agree, i forgot to cover that in management.
while cabinet is an extension of you in private they should almost act as a devils advocate to your ideas. outside a solid front must be maintained
I never had 'yes men' for exactly this reason... if I was going to seriously screw something up I wanted to know well in advance so I could avoid it
same here, especially in my 2nd term i had valentyme arguing with me on strategy all the time, it was very good since we hammered out a strategy that got us congress for that month and likely would not have worked if either of our original plans had been put into place.
You never had 'yes men'?
Sorry Larni have to call bullshit mate.
I was Larni's VP in her first term. You really think of me as a Yes-man?
Not a bad article minus the obvious. Several key ingredients were missing this month, a lack of community from my predecessor in transition, inactivity all over the shop - and worst of all my ideal Cabinet wasn't active enough for the task.
In fairness, the environment plays a large factor in government. Each Prime Ministerial candidate needs to consider their own timing, not just for themselves, but whether its the right temperature for their government.
Breaking it down to one thing, while all things haven't been great, it has shown how to shape a government. I wish someone in the future luck with making it happen better - but the template is there. It's utterly retarded to have two separate departments for article writing and many different bureaucracies for funding fighters. Regardless of its criticisms I firmly believe OAA is a good model for national wipes and it's obviously the supplies got where they were needed. Again, it comes down to having good communication (and good PAMU Commanders as well).
There's a lot to be learned, seen and observed from many terms in government. Problem is not many are given the chance to get that experience across all portfolios. Essentially, the best mix for a PM candidate is Foreign Affairs, Defence and supply, Treasury and Edu & Pub Info.
All in all - a good read. Cheers
It seems you didn't take a word of that article on board. Such a shame because it speaks so many truths that just won't sink in for you. Excellent article Tim.
Spot on flatty
Want some good tips on how to handle that time of the month?
get a room boys
My experience is that there are far too few people staffing Ministries. Getting a job is usually as simple as asking for it. I have yet to meet a CP who is not prepared to make room for someone clearly eager to serve.
Not getting experience is entirely your own doing. Step up and serve.
I'ma save this article somewhere
Good article Tim, and surely was missing. A lot depends on the personal skills. There are some people who just can't lead, without that probably the term can't be successful.
Wise words, shame they fall on deaf ears.
TL😉R.... but is "DO NOT MICROMANAGE" mentioned? When you elect Cabinet members let them do their bloody job, listen to them and trust their advice.
Too many CP's fall apart at the seams because of ego and their inability to release control. Sure as CP you may have an opinion but Ministers and Cabinet officials actually know a hell of a lot more about their area of expertise than you do. Where you have to look at everything, they are focused on individual aspects and have a better understanding of what is really going on in their ministry.
Do not over rule your ministers unless you have a bloody good reason or they will simply leave as we have seen this month. Not only does it look piss poor but it makes the CP look like a delusional egomaniac.
...so when you throwing your hat in the ring again?
I don't have any plans too at this stage though I have accepted some cabinet position requests this month. NSA for Cal and MoD Adviser for Csanat. (no requests from Nicky yet)
I think there needs to be a firm hand ready to steady the ship after what has happened this month but I certainly don't think its necessary for me to take away all your toys.... yet 😉
funnily enough Larni i was thinking the exact same thing, which is why i returned from my eVacation
😉 There is an art to coming second to loom without overshadowing. Or become a Minister.
I'll say this about former Prime Ministers - they hang around for good counsel, or to piss on their successors. Wisdom is great from the inexpensive seats of retirement.
We have never formalized the Council of Elders in Aus. We chose discretion and the Order of Australia route instead. Every CP needs to familiarize themselves with those names and understand how they got that distinction. Know that when the poo hits the fan they are tested to among the first to clean the mess without question.
Alternatively the others are used as scapegoats for the establishment hacks. LOL Dis and I should form our own. The elites have their own club up in the clouds.
Your signature is so pretty Tim~! Good article! 🙂
Media Do:
- Write often.
- Stay out of the Comments except to reinforce or clarify what you wrote.
Management Do:
- Set clear limits, duties and responsibilities.
- Seek regular feedback before its regrets all round.
Odds and Sods Do:
- Seek opinions broadly. Very few things need an instant solution.
- Take responsibility for all decisions. Its your leadership and choices that ultimately led to them.
Chuck Norris Approved.
TL😉R but I voted this 😛

Also I like to keep this handy Tim_Holtz quote in my forum sig to remind me of what a snake he is:
well considering multiple MUs in the UK asked me where to fight and i said dont waste your time in eAus
so yeah Aus very well could be winning
you don't think that just makes you a spiteful twat then?
sure it does
wanna compare to Micks who is against the TWO HQ run by a white Brit...oh and Mick also said he doesnt and refuses to fight for our allies despite all they do for us...
Stop being a fanboy, Hugh, and rather evaluate the quote for what it is. Its not a pissing contest or comparative shopping. Its successfully informs people that there is a douche in nearly every leader we've had despite the good stuff they sometimes say and do. I include myself because it takes effort and purpose to move Senate to impeachment.... qualities they often lack because the body is so large.
People are petty, egotistical, and do some crazy shit in the name of being right. Some overcome this long enough to lead effectively. Some even mask it well enough that it merely becomes a cute quirk. If you don't know your flaws going in with a plan to compensate for them; you will exit office with everyone knowing them. How is a decided by how stubborn you are.
Tim has shown he is prepared to do anything when he doesn't get his own way; even sabotage Australia. Several times. Despite that distasteful flaw, he was a solid CP and earned his reputation as a legendary MoFA (probably because of the flaw). I don't rate him as a MoD, but many others do. Ce la vie.
TJ let's things go to his head and gets tied up in his own head. His record is long and sad in this regard, and I still remember his adventure as adjunct to the US Foreign Department which forced me to reveal I am a bastard. That said, he communicates better in person than on paper where verbal gymnastics are harder to maintain. I like him in person. He wasn't even a bad CP and actually better than most because he entered office with a real plan. The Polish issue is a herring blown out of all proportion. Shit happens. What counts is how you fix it. The racism is very unfortunate and harder to fix in any meaningful way.
I wasnt defending what Tim said, I was pointing out the flaws in a CP that Infin seems to spend a lot of time defending...I was just squaring the debate so it was even 😉
Please show me where I have defended TJ....
Good article Tim
Nice work Tim - excellent read for CP hopefuls
Nice article and all that, but all you did was talk the talk, can you walk the walk?
We can all write articles of what a leader should be....does that make us all super leaders?
not at all, as i said in my disclaimer i dont think everyone is cut out for CP. but its not possible to 100% know before hand
Tim, i think what we should do....being that we are arch enemys... im Batman and your the crazy Green Goblin, we should open up our own Leadership Academy. Kinda like West Point in America.
Us 2 can instruct and make leaders!
since when are we arch enemies?
that would imply some kind of equal footing
Basically all the ministers act in your stead. The CP is no one man (or woman) army. Good CPs get the act together.
