Vaporwave is an electronic music genre that emerged in the early 2010s, and spread over the next half of the decade among various Internet communities. It is characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist fascination with retro cultural aesthetics (most commonly that of the 1980s and 1990s), entertainment technology, consumer culture and advertising and many styles of corporate and popular music, such as lounge, smooth jazz and elevator music. Sampling is prevalent within the genre, with samples often pitched, layered or altered, sometimes in a classic chopped and screwed style.Artists often embrace classical sculpture, 1990s web design, low poly computer renderings, glitch art, VHS, Cassette Tape, East Asian Artwork, and cyberpunk.

After abandoning the original concept, vaporwave shifted into various different sub-genres and future funk is one of them.

Modern Future Funk is a sample heavy musical genre that utilizes 70's, 80's, and 90's disco/funk/r&b sounds with the addition of editing, chopping/screwing, and adding new sounds to create new music. Older examples of Future Funk found on this subreddit have more Vaporwave influences: an affinity for nostalgic sounds, lo-fi distortion, and slowed-down samples. With the evolution of Future Funk, more anime and Japanese Funk was included in the genre, with this, upbeat sounds and tones are more commonplace. Sometimes hip-hop or jazz influences can be found within this style as well. Considering the growing nature of Future Funk, this definition will be updated as the genre evolves.
