Day One: The Attack | Part One
I awoke that night to a slight rumble, almost like a shiver, cold and quick through my body. It was early, three in the morning and I still had the smell of Scotch rich on my breath. I stepped out of bed, my feet warm on the freshly carped apartment floor, I waddled and stumbled my way to the window a result of my partial inebriation and part sleepiness. I felt my way over the ten feet of cluttered space that was the path from my bed to the balcony's glass sliding door. Feeling around the new silk drapes I grabbed tugged them aside, looking out the window I could see a ghostly red-orange glow in the distance coming from downtown. Just at that moment my cellphone placed on the nightstand across the room began vibrating and barking out an ever so irritating ringtone. It caught me by surprise, almost causing me to turn around and trip over some carelessly strewn pile of bedspread that lay on the floor.

I felt my hands all over the wall until I found a light switch and flipped it on. The lights burnt my eyes as if I'd just been staring at the Sun for some time. I quickly rubbed my eyes and ran through the cluttered apartment bedroom to the phone, this was not my personal cellphone, no, this was the one issued to all government members. With a single motion I swept up the phone and answered it, the voice on the other end was a familiar one, the distinct Romanian accent of President Bogdan.
"H-Hello?" I mumbled almost in a stutter at the same time.
"They've begun the attack, get to the government office as soon as you can" said the President in a quite awake and sturdy voice.

I sloppily threw on a suit and rushed out of my apartment. As soon as I closed the heavy apartment door behind me, and quite to my luck, the power went out. I was beginning to wake up more and was able to get myself down ten flights of stairs to my government car. I jabbed the keys into the ignition and drove off into the dark and empty streets. As I came closer to the government offices I could see clearly that the troops training was paying off, the roads were almost clear of civilian traffic and they had set up a defensive line around the government office, should the fighting spread to there.

Outside the Ministry of Defense headquarters crowds of people gathered around the security line trying to figure out what exactly was going on. The area didn't seem to be damaged from the fighting, which I assumed was still taking place in the north. I stepped inside to people walking and some running about the offices, my staff quickly encircled me, shouting and barking bits of information at me as I quickly walked into the war room. Inside the blue-lighted and high-tech room stood the President and several others as well as a commander representing the allied forces who had some to assist us in this struggle.
