Communication Please! Come out of your IRC backrooms!

Day 1,906, 07:20 Published in Australia Chile by Vyrin the First

Part of the damage that eAus does to itself comes from the fact that most of what takes place goes on in dark, smoke-filled IRC backrooms.

Then we get snippets of conversation, spun in all directions to try to prove this or that political point. End result: no transparency, no clarity on what is actually happening.

As much as it may seem cumbersome, all significant debates and important issues should be done primarily here - in the news. The in-game news in this country is quite pathetic. It improved substantially last administration, but needs to continue to be reinforced.

Why is this important?

1) So that some of our most outspoken players can prove they are not simply interested in behind-the-scenes manipulation. If they're working for the good of eAUS let them show what they're doing in public.

2) To give other countries clarity about what we're doing and where we're headed, so they have less of a chance to twist things in their favor.

3) To give all players, especially new ones, a chance to learn what is going on and provide input. IRC is not a good medium when people are spread across time zones.

Now you will say, we have a forum for that. Well the forum is quite cumbersome to use and follow. Plus, it has issues that undermine what I have just listed.

People will of course scream that they need the privacy that IRC allows for sensitive negotiations and chats. True, but then follow it up with a news article. Share what you can about what you know. Better that then to have it used against you weeks later.

IRC allows manipulators too much free play right now at the expense of the success of all of us in this eWorld. It allows people to say anything they want about us and each other with impunity.

As usual though, my ideas are like shouting in the wind. So I don't expect much - just put it out there. But you have to agree our news posting is quite pathetic.
