A Day for Love

Day 2,278, 09:29 Published in Ireland Ireland by Paddy OBrien

Today many of us celebrate St. Valentine's day as a day of romance and love. In that mode, I wanted to wish our ladies a happy Valentine's Day.

How many legends are there of great love to inspire us? They range from the love of Paris for Helen, that launched the Trojan War, to the love of Orpheus for his wife Eurydice. When she died from snake bite, he went to the Underworld to save her and charmed the gods for her (it didn't work out in the end, but that deserves some serious credit). The story of Romeo and Juliet will always be with us. There is also the story of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. After her death in child birth, he built the Taj Mahal as her final resting place.

Many great, and occasionally sinister, deeds have been driven by love. Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere would be a definite example of this. From the Old Testament we see the love of Jacob for Rachel. Having worked for 7 years to earn Rachel as his wife, he was forced to marry her older sister. He worked again to earn Rachel's hand, devoting 14 years to gain the privilege of marrying the woman he loved.

How many men don't look up to the legends of Casanova?

For the ladies that continue to inspire us to greatness, I dedicate this song.

Happy Valentine's Day. May you find the best that life and love have to offer.
