Cuando colgué el teléfono después de hablar con el agregado cultural de la embajada portuguesa, no pude evitar una cierta preocupación ante la peligrosa tarea que me aguardaba. Mi contacto había afirmado que todo iría sobre ruedas, que todos los cabos estaban atados: y sin embargo, no podía evitar sentirme intranquilo.

La cita estaba fijada para 48 horas después, al anochecer, en las cercanías de la Glorieta, la plaza de toros de eSalamanca. En las últimas semanas, tras la crisis de los misiles del conflicto en la región de Centro, se había llegado a una cierta distensión en las relaciones hispano-portuguesas. Como muestra de buena voluntad, el gobierno ePortugués había vuelto a permitir las giras de grupos de forcados por nuestro país.

Allí estaba yo esperando al grupo de portugueses, alrededor de las 9 de la tarde: llegaron con extrema puntualidad, bajaron de la furgoneta, con el comisario político al frente (tras el conocido episodio, semanas atrás, de las deserciones de forcados en una exhibición en las cercanías de eBadajoz, todos los grupos iban acompañados por un comisario del partido Deixa Andar). El comisario me miró, me dio la mano, y sonriendo, se limitó a mostrarme un traje de forcado y un pasaporte de la eRepublika Portuguesa. Pasaría por uno más del grupo al cruzar la frontera.

Me cambié en la parte de atrás de la furgoneta. Partimos enseguida, tomamos la A-62, y ya de noche cerrada, llegamos al checkpoint Carlinhos, el puesto de control fronterizo en el muro que separaba las localidades de Fuentes de Oñoro y Vilar Formoso.

Un grupo de guardias armados nos hicieron bajar de la furgoneta, mientras examinaban nuestros pasaportes y un par de pastores alemanes ladraban furiosos, apenas retenidos por las correas con que les sujetaban unos reclutas imberbes. Noté cómo una gota de sudor me caía por la sien, sabiendo que este era el punto crítico de mi viaje. Con el corazón latiéndome a mil por hora, no pude evitar un suspiro de alivio cuando el capitán del puesto fronterizo dijo “você pode continuar” y volvimos todos a la furgoneta. Vencido por los nervios, caí dormido rápidamente.

Cuando desperté, estábamos en las afueras de eLisboa. No tardamos en llegar al centro de la capital, y finalmente, a la Praça Vermelha (antes conocida como Praça do Comercio). La presencia policial era notable en las calles de la capital lusa, pues ese mismo día se inauguraba el XXVII Congreso del Partidão, la Coalición Socialista-Comunista gobernante en ePortugal.

Finalmente, el comisario político me acompañó a la sede del Ministerio da Defesa: entramos por una puerta lateral poco transitada, subimos por unas enormes escaleras, atravesamos pasillos desiertos y finalmente accedimos a un impresionante despacho, en el que detrás de una sólida mesa de roble se encontraba el hombre al que había venido a entrevistar: Euphonix. Nos saludamos con un sobrio apretón de manos, respiré hondo, y puse en marcha mi grabadora.


EHS.- ¿Como logró convertirse en el tanque más poderoso de PEACE?

No soy el tanque más poderoso de PEACE. Al menos all-x, flik_kenni y pronto enze son también Field Marshalls y tienen más fuerza que yo.

Pero lo que originó mi carrera military fue el primer ataque de España en Campeche. De los jugadores disponibles entonces, yo era el que tenía más fuerza (y ya algo de rango… no recuerdo exactamente cual) así que fui elegido para ser el tanque principal. Solo aquella batalla me convirtió en General (el primero portugués, creo) y desde entonces fui lógicamente la primera elección en el ejército portugués para la financiación.

EHS.- Como posiblemente sepa, muchas personas en los países de ATLANTIS creen que PEACE ha utilizado en ciertos momentos oro “sucio” para ganar batallas. ¿Qué puede comentarnos sobre esto? ¿Cuales son (en su caso) sus principales fuentes de financiación y de armas?

Mucha gente en PEACE piensa lo mismo sobre ATLANTIS. No hay vuelta de hoja y a la vez tienen razón y están equivocados, en mi opinión. Creo que hubo quien se aprovechó del bug del gold en ambos bandos y también creo que no se puede asociar a ATLANTIS o PEACE a esas acciones individuales. Por desgracia también creo que, a pesar de las afirmaciones de los admins, parte del oro tramposo no se borró en su momento y “sobrevivió” a la limpieza, de nuevo en ambos bandos.
En cuanto a mi financiación, proviene principalmente del gobierno portugués y en ocasiones de otros ejércitos de PEACE (como el italiano, el húngaro o el indonesio, por ejemplo) o de la cooperación entre Portugal y otros países (por ejemplo, Portugal proporciona las armas y otros países el gold para los wellness packs).

EHS.- En las últimas elecciones al congreso, los takeovers se extendieron por todo el eMundo. ¿Cuál es su posición sobre este tema?

Odio los TOs con pasión. Creo que los TOs están arruinando el juego para mucha gente y he conocido “personalmente” a algunos que han dejado el juego a causa de ello. No es difícil pillar el concepto, intente imaginar a un grupo de belgas gobernando España *grin*
Desafortunadamente a los admins parecen gustarles los TOs puesto que no escuchan a todos los ciudadanos que llevan reclamando la implementación de la nacionalidad (o algo por el estilo) durante los últimos 6 meses, al menos.


EHS.- Campeche (el Southeast) fue una importante fuente de conflictos en la Guerra Hispano-Portuguesa. Mientras afirmaba defender México de la amenaza española, Portugal retuvo durante mucho tiempo esa región sin firmar un MPP con México. ¿Estaba Portugal realmente protegiendo a México o su participación en ese conflicto estaba más bien guiada por la rivalidad con España?

En mi opinión la participación estuvo motivada por ambos factores, y también por el tema ATLANTIS vs. PEACE, pero principalmente para realmente proteger a México de ser aniquilado.

Un MPP con México no habría ayudado en absoluto puesto que así es como tuvimos la guerra Portugal vs. México que nos permitió tomar Campeche en primer lugar. La norma ha cambiado ahora, pero en aquel momento cuando un país declaraba la guerra (México declaró la guerra a España) y tiene frontera con otro país que tiene un MPP con el país “atacado” (Portugal aún tenía MPP con España en aquel momento) se abría una nueva guerra entre aquellos países y el MPP no tenía efecto (Portugal no pudo “ayudar” a España contra México a través del MPP). Lo mismo habría ocurrido con un MPP con México, simplemente intercambiando a España por México en los hechos.
Además, el gobierno portugués siempre afirmó que la región se devolvería tan pronto como España firmase la paz con México, lo cual nunca ocurrió. No queríamos devolverla porque sería conquistada fácilmente por España… y con ella, el resto de México. Trabajé de manera muy cercana (y aún lo hago) con el gobierno en aquel momento y le puedo asegurar que estas intenciones eran honestas.

EHS.- ¿Hay espacio para el entendimiento entre ambas naciones enemigas? ¿Cuál sería su mensaje al pueblo español sobre esta guerra?

En este momento diría que no. Demasiado trolleo y provocación por ambas partes, demasiados ataques y batallas luchados…

A largo plazo sería algo que me gustaría que sucediera. Una vez hubo buenas relaciones entre nuestras naciones y espero que al menos parte de ello pueda ser reinstaurado. Pero estas cosas son fácilmente destruidas y llevan mucho tiempo y trabajo para ser curadas. Personalmente preferiría tener buenas relaciones con nuestros vecinos, no solo por un asunto de seguridad de Portugal ingame sino también porque le tengo bastante aprecio a España en la VR (incluso mi apellido es español).

EHS.- ¿Realmente piensa que Portugal habría vencido a USA en el ultimo conflicto en México sin haber tenido 8 aliados? ¿Y cual es su opinión acerca de la estrategia de los USA en ese conflicto?

No, por supuesto que Portugal nunca habría ganado una batalla uno contra uno contra USA sin tener aliados. Incluso aunque estemos mejor organizados y tengamos mayor fuerza en promedio, ellos tenían 10 mil u 11 mil ciudadanos en ese momento.

La estrategia de Estados Unidos fue un desastre. Teníamos muy pocas esperanzas de que fueran a por Campeche pero nunca perdimos la fe, conociendo al tío Sam 🙂 Cuando atacó las últimas tres regiones fue un alivio en el cuartel general de PEACE puesto que sabíamos que ya no tendríamos que preocuparnos más por México.

EHS.- Como experto military en eR, ¿el modulo de guerra le parece satisfactorio? ¿No piensa que el sistema de MPP no es totalmente justo en su actual configuración?

No me gusta el campo de batalla. No me gusta golpear un muro y quiero que vuelva el sistema persona contra persona porque era mucho más entretenido.
Ahora está ese asunto del intercambio de regiones que están usando algunos países. Empezó con Irán e Indonesia para que así Indonesia tuviera frontera con Rumania y no Irán, y en los últimos días ha sido Rumania usándolo en todos sus frentes (intercambiando territorios para evitar derrotas y/o expandir su imperio con Polonia, Noruega y el TO a Pakistán). Esto también corrompe el módulo de guerra pero de nuevo no creo que los admins hagan nada al respecto.

En cuanto al sistema de MPPs, no estoy seguro de qué quiere decir con que no sea justo. Hace que sea mucho más duro ser imperialista, pero eso me gusta. Sin el sistema de MPPs los países pequeños no podrían durar mucho contra los grandes y no tendrían apenas ninguna esperanza de recuperar sus territorios.


EHS.- Hablemos de Portugal. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre el sistema político y económico que existe en su país? ¿No cree que puede ser una limitación para la diversidad y posibilidades de entretenimiento de los jugadores ePortugueses?

Ya cambiamos ese sistema cuando llegó la v1 🙂 En la beta tenía sentido concentrar tantos jugadores como fuera posible en una empresa puesto que maximizaba la producción, en la v1 esto ya no funciona puesto que la fórmula de producción ha cambiado y ahora estamos operando en un sistema similar al de la mayoría de países. Tenemos aún algunas compañías estatales pero no son dominantes y se usan principalmente para entrenar y almacenar stock, como creo que ocurre también en España.


EHS.- ¿Planea retirarse del ejército e involucrarse más en otros aspectos, como la política en su país?

No tengo planes de retirarme del ejército en este momento. Pero he sido parte de diferentes gobiernos durante muchos meses ya, la mayor parte del tiempo en cargos “técnicos”, desde manager de compañías estatales y manager del banco nacional hasta consejero militar y representante en PEACE.
Estar en el ejército no excluye tener cargos en el gobierno, excepto ser congresista o presidente, lo cual no persigo.

EHS.- ¿Llegará algún día el fin de la guerra ATLANTIS-PEACE?

Siempre habrá confrontación, sea ATLANTIS contra PEACE o cualesquiera otros dos bloques o más que vengan después. Y el juego no sería ni la mitad de divertido sin ello. Por el momento, mientras el eje del mal Rumania-USA-España mantenga sus acciones siempre tendremos algo que hacer y contra lo que luchar *grin*


EHS.- Y finalmente, la pregunta que todos nuestros lectores están esperando: ¿es ese bigote de verdad?

Sí es auténtico en el sentido en que no está dibujado con Photoshop. Pero nunca he llevado mostacho fuera de casa. A veces me dejo crecer barba y cuando me afeito hago fotos 😛

ENGLISH VERSION

When I hung up the phone after talking with the cultural attaché of the Portuguese embassy, I could not avoid a certain concern about the dangerous task that lied ahead. My contact said that everything was going to run smoothly: yet I could not help feeling uneasy.

The appointment was fixed for 48 hours later, at dusk, near La Glorieta, the bullring of eSalamanca. In recent weeks, following the missile crisis of the conflict in the region of Centro, it had been reached a certain relaxation in the Spanish-Portuguese diplomatic relations. As a token of goodwill, the ePortuguese government had allowed again tours of groups of forcados along our country.

There I was waiting for the ePortuguese group, about 9 in the evening they came with the utmost punctuality, went down from the van, with the political commissar ahead (after the famous episode weeks ago related to the desertion of a group of forcados in an exhibition nearby eBadajoz, all groups were accompanied by a commissar of the Deixa Andar party). The commissar looked at me, shook me his hand and smiled, simply showing me a forcado suit and a passport from the Portuguese eRepublika. I would disguise as one more in the group to cross the border.

I changed my clothes on the back of the van. We departed right away, took the A-62, and at night we arrived at Checkpoint Carlinhos, the control stand in the wall that separates the towns of Fuentes de Oñoro and Vilar Formoso.

A group of armed guards made us get off the van, while they examined our passports and a pair of German shepherds bark furious, barely held back by the straps hold by couple of beardless recruits. I noticed how a drop of sweat fell down from my temple, knowing that this was the turning point of my trip. With my heart beating crazy, I could not help a sigh of relief when the captain of the border post said "você pode continuar” and we all returned to the van. Overcome by nerves, I felt asleep quickly.

When I woke up, we were on the outskirts of eLisboa. It took not long to come to the centre of the capital, and finally to the Praça Vermelha (formerly known as Praça do Comercio). The police presence was noticeable on the streets of the ePortuguese capital, since that day opened the XXVII Congress of the Partidão, the ruling Socialist-Communist Coalition in ePortugal.

Finally, the political commissar accompanied me to the seat of the Ministerio da Defesa: we entered through a little side door, climbed a big stairs, traversed desert hallways and finally we accessed to an impressive bureau, in which behind a solid oak table was the man I had come to interview: Euphonix. We greet with a sober handshake, I breathed deep, and I launched my recorder.

EHS.- How did you become the most powerful tank of PEACE?

I am not the most powerful tank from PEACE. At least all-x, flik_kenni and, soon, enze are also Field Marshals and have higher strength than me.

But what started my military career was the first attack from Spain in Campeche. From the players available at the time, I was the one with higher strength (and some rank already… can’t remember exactly what) so I was chosen to be the main tank. That battle only, made me General (first Portuguese I think) and from then on I was the obvious first choice in the Portuguese military for funding.

EHS.- As you may know, many pleople in ATLANTIS countries believes that PEACE has used at certain moments "dirty" gold to win battles. Could you comment on that? Which are (in your case) your main sources of financing and weapons?
Many people in PEACE think the same about Atlantis. There’s no way around it and they’re both right and wrong, in my opinion. I believe that there were gold bug abusers in both sides but I also believe that you can’t tie Atlantis or PEACE to these individuals actions. Unfortunately I also believe that, despite admin claims, some of the bugged gold wasn’t deleted at the time and “survived” the cleansing, again in both sides.
As for my funding, it is mostly from Portuguese government and at some times from other PEACE armies (such as Italian, Hungarian or Indonesian, for example) or from cooperation between Portugal and other countries (for example, Portugal provides the weapons and other countries the gold for wellness packs).

EHS.- In the last congress elections, takeovers spread all over the eWorld. What's your position about this issue?
I hate TOs with a passion. I believe TOs are ruining the game for many people and I’ve “personally” known a few that left the game because of it. It’s not hard to grasp the concept, try to imagine a bunch of Belgians ruling Spain. *grin*
Unfortunately admins seem to like TOs since they don’t listen all the citizens asking for citizenship (or something of the sorts) for the last 6 months, at least.

What I’d really like to see, if admins keep it as it is, is Atlantis and PEACE agreeing on the matter, condemning TOs and fighting together against them. This is hardly a practicable or realistic dream, but it would be awesome.

EHS.- Campeche (the Southeast) was a source of major conflict in the Spanish-Portuguese war. While claiming to defend Mexico from the Spanish menace, Portugal retained long time that region without signing a MPP with the Mexicans... Was Portugal really just protecting Mexico or its involvement in that conflict was more oriented towards the rivalry with Spain?
In my opinion the involvement was motivated by both factors, and also the Atlantis VS PEACE matter, but mainly to really protect Mexico from being annihilated.

An MPP with Mexico wouldn’t help at all since this is how we got the war Portugal vs Mexico that allowed us to take Campeche in the first place. The rule is now changed, but at the time when a country declared war (Mexico declares war to Spain) and borders another country that has an MPP with the “attacked” country (Portugal still had MPP with Spain at the time) a new war was opened between those countries and the MPP doesn’t take effect (Portugal couldn’t “help” Spain vs Mexico through the MPP). The same would happen with an MPP with Mexico, just swapping Spain with Mexico in the events.

Also, the Portuguese government always claimed that the region would be returned as soon as Spain signed peace with Mexico, which they never did. We didn’t want to return it so that it could be conquered easily by Spain… and with it, the rest of Mexico. I worked closely (and still do) with the government at the time and I can assure you that these intentions were honest.


EHS.- Is there some room for understanding between both enemy eNations? what would be your message to the Spanish people about this war?

At the moment I’d say no. Too much trolling and provoking from both sides, too many attacks and battles fought…

In the long term it would be something that I’d like to see happen. There were once good relations between our nations and I hope that at least some of it can be restored. But these things are easily destroyed and take a long time and much work to heal. Personally I'd prefer to have good relations with our neighbours, not only for matter of security of Portugal ingame but also because I'm quite fond of Spain irl (even my family name is spanish).


EHS.- Do you really think that Portugal would have beaten the USA in the last conflict in Mexico without having 8 allies? And what's your opinion about the US strategy in that conflict?

No, of course Portugal could never win a one-on-one battle with USA without having allies. Even if we’re better organized and have a higher average strength, they had around 10k or 11k citizens at the time.

The US strategy was a disaster. We had very little hope they’d go for Campeche but we never lost faith, knowing a bit about Uncle Sam 🙂 When he attacked the last three regions it was a relief in PEACE headquarters since we knew we didn’t had to worry about Mexico anymore.


EHS.- As a military expert in eR, do you find the war module satisfactory? Don't you think that the MPP system is not really fair in its present configuration?

The battlefield I don’t like. I don’t like to hit a wall and I want the PVP system back because it was much more entertaining.

Now there’s this swap regions thing that some countries are using. It started with Iran and Indonesia so that it would be Indonesia bordering Romania and not Iran and in the last few days it has been Romania using it in all fronts (switching territories to avoid defeat and/or to expand their empire with Poland, Norway and TOed Pakistan). It also corrupts the war module but again, I don’t think admins will do anything about it.

As for the MPP system, I’m not sure what you mean by it not being fair. It makes it a lot harder to be imperialistic but I like that. Without the MPP system small countries couldn’t last long against bigger ones and could hardly have any hopes at gaining their territory back.


EHS.- Let us talk about Portugal. What's your opinion about the political and economic system existing in your country? Don't you think that it may be a constraint for the diversity and entertainment possibilities for the ePortuguese players?

We already changed the system when v1 came 🙂 In beta it made sense to concentrate as many players as possible in a company since it maximized production, in v1 that doesn’t work anymore since the production formula was changed and now we’re operating in a system similar to most countries. We still have some state companies but they’re not dominant and are used mostly for training and stock, as I believe it works in Spain too.


EHS.- Do you plan to retire from the army and get more involved in other aspects, like politics in your own country?

I have no plans to retire from the army at the moment. But I’ve been part of different governments for many months now, most of the time in “technical” roles, from manager of state companies and manager of national bank to military advisor and PEACE representative.

Being in the military doesn’t exclude government roles, except congressman or president which I don’t aim for.

EHS.- Shall we expect some day the end of the ATLANTIS-PEACE war?

There will always be confrontation, be it Atlantis VS PEACE or any other two or more blocks that come after. And the game wouldn’t be half as fun without it. For the time being, as long as the evil axis Romania-USA-Spain keep up their actions we’ll always have something to do and fight against. *grin*

EHS.- And finally, the question that all our readers are expecting: is that moustache authentic?

Yes it is authentic in the sense that it is not photoshoped. But I’ve never worn a moustache outside. Sometimes I grow a beard and when I shave it I take pictures. 😛
