Just to add a counterpoint here. I know people dislike musk for all the weird stuff he's done and he's done a lot of questionable stuff the more money he's gotten.
But it's mostly the same kind of personality traits that's allowed him to do the things he's done and to do them differently from everyone else. You can't expect a guy who's thinking normally to really break and transform the world. People generally cast psychopaths in a very negative light. But a psychopath with a sense of direction can be transformative and bring a lot of changes for humanity even though personally they are detestable. If you read through history you will find many examples of great movers being absolute eccentrics - people like Newton to Gandhi were that way too in their personal lives. What is different now is that we have social media and global connectivity. Want to imagine Newton on twitter? - pretty sure he would say even dumber things than musk. But history remembers him for his long term contributions and i usually try to take the long view in these things.
People will always find a way to hate if that's what they want to do. And this has happened here also (ie wrt Musk buying Twitter). But there is a line between hating him because he's richer than we'll ever be, and genuine concern.
A reporter for a big media company (I won't take the name here but suffice it to say that I get my entire Ukraine Russia conflict news largely from here) said that China will now lean on him to push their narrative and unban thir bot army in exchange for letting him do business properly there (for reference, a lot of his raw materials for Tesla electric and spaceX comes from China with little alternative). This is kind of fear mongering (may not be exactly the word for it), . Considering that China banned Twitter decades ago, they have little to benifit from this, and also that Musk knows how to handle these muddy waters
Way before Musk took over Twitter it was an abhorrent place. Spending a few minutes there and reading the short mindless comments made me want to hang myself. Many places say users of Twitter detest it but keep on coming back to it.
I know people who rely on twitter for news and they're complete idiots to rely on a media that is completely unverified and with no editorial control. So it's people's responsibility to get their information from reliable sources rather than from sources like Twitter or reddit. They're entertainment and you don't believe the stuff you get from an TV show either.
People keep coming back to Twitter for the same reason we still login to eRepublik - we have invested too much time and effort to let it go just like that. Similarly they have spent too much time on twitter and made it their habit to keep going back, and interacting with the media there, no matter how toxic it becomes. And Musk may do many things and I don't at all doubt his ability or commitment but I feel even he can't fix it. Like how Indian media depends on Modi and RaGa to talk out of their ass some local politician to say some communal shit for their survival, Twitter survives on these controversial things. Hashtags that get pushed up are the ones most tagged, and things like #mybodymyrupes won't get tagged of anti-vax squad is put down. Tweets with 5000 comments get Twitter more average screen time than tweets with 3 likes and 4 comments, and only 2 things create this Buzz - celebs and controversial things (and as a bonus, controversial celebs). Without this twitter will lose lot of screen time and with that, revenues
As for people getting their news from Twitter, this is basically a case of observation bias, where people tend to believe things that they feel is right rather than the other side. Doesn't matter that the sources are poor or whatever, if me and 35 others feel something is right, surely not all of us can be wrong or fooled. There must be some logic and reasoning behind it, is what they feel. What they don't see is that the 35 others are also applying the same logic, and there is no fundamental reason why they are right. They agree simply because they like the idea, and therefore it must be right. That's why people vote for right wing politician a lot these days globally but still want state sponsored stuffs if they are jobless or poor - something that's probably the first thing they would disagree with if they are truly right wing supporters.
Similar is the case for the trouble in SL as well (this is beside the point but worth making in the context I feel). Everyone liked the idea of organic farming. Everyone liked the idea of lowering taxes. Everyone liked the idea of freebies. But nobody saw that by going 100% organic, their output will fall drastically and they will have to import more while not being able to export much. They didn't realise that by cutting taxes the government will not have financial headway to do things and take up basic projects. They didn't realise that by asking lot of freebies, the government was starved of the little money it had. So when COVID hit, tourism stopped, remittances fell drastically, but demand remakes the same. Government was forced to borrow more aggressively than before (which many experts were flagging before also), and then when the time came to pay up, they had already emptied their coffers giving free stuff and there was no money left with which to pay back. And now people are protesting against the very government they voted to power for doing the exact thing they wanted the government to do.
The point is, people don't think too much about every topic. Most people don't have the time, and those who do, most of them don't know enough, and trust some person about it (say a celebrity or Trump or Musk or some Baba) and follow blindly. That's what is happening on Twitter, and Twitter now thrives on it (see above).
