Hello there eUK,

This is my first article as the new Speaker of Congress, after the vote ended this afternoon.

I’d like to start by just saying a thank you to all the Congressmen who voted for me to be your new Speaker for the term ahead. The results of the election can be found below:





Today I’d just like to outline to you, the eUK Congress and the eUK Community as a whole, what I will be aiming to deliver to you this month. Fundamentally, it is readily apparent that the eUK Congress is not fulfilling its roles nearly as well as it could do.

From my experience with the half of Congress I interacted with last month, I think it is untrue to say that Congress is simply inactive, ill-informed and just generally useless. Looking down the list of people elected this month, there is a multitude of experienced, active and competent people that have been elected.



The fundamental problem, as I see it, is that Congress is acting as a disorganised group of 40 individuals; the communication inside Congress is poor, Congress is not currently producing effective scrutiny of the CP and his Ministers, and there is also a total lack of actual governing coming from Congress. We need to remember that the game mechanics make Congress just as much the 'Government' as the CP, the two aren't seperate things. Any failures of the UK Government is as much the responsibility of Congress as well as the CP.

I have identified three key problems with Congress that I will try to address over the next month, with the help of the whole of Congress and the wider eUK Community.

Problem 1: Poor communication inside Congress

Problem 2: Lack of effective scrutiny of the executive from Congress

Problem 3: Lack of governance from Congress (Everything comes from the CP, why?)

In order to get long-term sustainable and workable solutions to these problems, I will be holding large scale public debates on these issues so that we can get a common consensus on these issues in the community now, so that in 3 months time we haven’t got people wanting to dismantle the whole thing. Debates will be held on IRC and in articles that will be published, as well as on the Forums. I want every part of the eUK Community to be a part of the discussions so we can get a system we all can work with.



One thing I am introducing immediately is Congressional IRC meetings,to have discussion taking place in real time. These will be held twice-weekly, probably on Sunday and Wednesday nights. It will not be mandatory to attend every meeting (How could it be) but I think the people of the eUK would expect a certain level of activity from their representatives, and I will be publishing who attends each meeting and what was discussed.

The first Congress Meeting will be this Wednesday 4th March and will be held on #eukhoc. Please do come if you can, and PM me if you are busy and there’s no problem. If you don’t have access to that channel, please contact either me or Kravenn with your IRC nick for access.

This is only the introduction to what I want to do this month, there will be much more detail spelled out in the coming days about how this month is going to run.

Also, this month I'm going to be needing some help, namely two Deputy Speakers. I have already talked to a couple of people, but if you are interested in a role, please PM me.
