Politics 101

Day 1,642, 04:04 Published in USA USA by Department of Citizen Affairs

This is a very basic guide on how to get started in politics, those who follow these steps will have a very good foundation for getting involved politically.

Politics for Dummies:
Politics is the one area of the game that actually imitates real life. Just like in real life the parties have few philosophical differences, so the issues become secondary to personalities and relationships. The number of votes one receives is more about their likeability and personality than any plan they put forward. With this said I will explain to new players how to effectively play the game of politics in the eUS.

Step One: Make Friends
Friend every person you come into contact with either in-game, on IRC, in your party forums, or in the eUS forums. (Assuming you had a positive experience dealing with them.) Be as outgoing and as helpful as you can be when dealing with other players.

Pro Tip: Once you join a party, take the time to message your fellow party members and send them a friend request. This is a good way to start building relationships.

Step Two: Get Involved
Join a party. After joining a party PM your Party President and let them know you’re new to the party and are looking to get involved. They’ll usually message you back and direct you to the Party’s Forum or IRC channel. If you’re not familiar with IRC most will explain what it is and how to use it. (Or you can wait for a future article here and we will explain it) IRC and your party’s forum is essential if you are serious about politics, If you are interested in Congress you need to get involve on the eUS forums as well. (Most of the work done for Congress is done in the forums, so if you’re not interested in spending a lot of time working on forums Congress is probably not for you.) After doing all of this, volunteer to help out anytime your party or the government needs help.

Step Three: Find your own path
The clear path to a good political career is building more relationships, and being helpful to your party and nation.
The government often offers internships that are a good place to start in politics. If you’re interested in helping new players a good place to start is volunteering to help out with the Department of Interior and Department of Education programs. If you’re interested in diplomacy and foreign affairs look for an internship in the State Department, if you're interested in working for you party look for opportunities to get involved there.

In other words, “Get in where you fit in.” Find something you’re good at and enjoy and make an attempt to get in on the ground floor. There is always plenty of work to be done and those who step up are generally recognized and rewarded for their efforts. Your results are directly related to your effort, the more you contribute to the game the further you’ll go in it.

Step Four: Rinse and Repeat
Your goal if you want to develop politically is to get as much experience in as many aspects of the game as possible, and continue building relationships and making friends.

In the next article I will speak specifically about campaigning for Congress and what to expect when you get there.
