New Player Education: Companies and You

Note: This article does not go in depth into economic theory or tricks, it's almost completely basic, normal mechanics around organization and company management. If you're looking for extensive info on economics, that's not my strong suit. We're planning a class on it in NAU (taught by someone else), so sign up on the forums and look out for that.

As I promised in my last article (which became obsolete in a record 12 hours), this article will pertain to anything and everything to creating and running a company, earning big bucks and helping your country's economy grow! There is a lot of information to absorb for company-crafting, so grab a cup of coffee or bookmark this and read it in fragments. It'll be worth it, I promise. 😉

Organizations

Before you make a company, you need a staging ground. A host, in a sense. That's what organizations are for. Organizations are a special character that you can create for yourself. Some buy them for simple muling or storage, some use them for companies, like we are. They are created from your citizen, and afterwards, are completely stand alone: they have their own e-mail, log-in, currency accounts, 20-space inventory, the works. Organizations do not have health or happiness, can't work or train, earn medals, or be involved in voting or politics. When you create a company on your citizen character, you lose 1 health every day. However, creating a company on your health-immune organization will allow you to reap the benefits of managing with none of the drawbacks.

Organizations also have a couple other uses. Should your citizen have to leave the country for voting or military deployment, your organization can stay in the U.S. while you're away. this allows you to access the U.S. marketplace instead of having to break up your gold and buy foreign while you're away. This is especially helpful if you're deployed to a hostile country and don't want to pay your enemies taxes. Your organization gets 20 inventory slots just like your citizen, and can be used for personal storage.

Your organization can work as a host for your business + an anchor to your home market

To buy an organization, click here: Organization Page. Click Create new and fill out the boxes. You need to supply another e-mail address for an organization, so get another one if you only have one. Starting an org will set you back 5 gold from your citizen's account.

Companies

Companies are entities that you're familiar with as your workplace. You sign up for a job in a company owned by a dubious silent man (or some Pakistani guy who looks like Brad Pitt), collect your wages, and don't ask any questions. Companies require a ton of capital, but have a lot more earning potential than simply working. You may find yourself asking "Why should I limit myself to being a peon when I can have a power tie as a manager?"

There are three types of companies in the new worl😛 raw material companies, product companies, and construction companies.

Raw material companies are businesses that extract materials from the land it’s built on for use in product crafting. The industries are Grain, Stone, Oil, Titanium, and Iron. Raw material companies should only be built on high resource regions for their respective industry: Grain in California, Stone in Pennsylvania, Oil in Texas or Oklahoma. You can build a Titanium company in Far Eastern Russia, but it is foreign soil so there is more risk than usual. We don’t have any high Iron regions.

Product companies are businesses that use extracted raw materials to craft products we use everyday. The industries are Food, Moving Tickets, and all four weapons: Rifle, Tank, Air Unit, and Artillery. Grain is used for Food, Oil is used for Moving Tickets, Titanium is used for Artillery and Helicopters, and Iron is used for Rifles and Tanks.

Construction companies are businesses that use Stone to craft hospitals, defense systems, and houses. House companies require a lot more capital than normal, and hospitals and defense systems are nationalized by the U.S. government. You should not enter the house industry if you’re starting your first company, and never enter the hospital or DS industry.

Once you have your organization squared away, you can buy a company on your organization for 40 gold. 20 gold will be spent, and the other 20 will go into your company’s accounts so you can finance your first few days as a manager. You can pick the company's name, logo, industry and location. Make sure you locate it in your corresponding high resource region if you make a raw materials company. You can put product companies anywhere you like. You can never move your company to another country or region, so choose wisely!

Your company gets its own bank account to trade gold for local currency (like USD) or buy raw materials and other items. You can access this with a dropdown menu on the marketplace or monetary market pages in the top right of the page. Any earnings from your business will go into your company’s bank account, not your organizations’. I’ll explain how to deposit/withdraw momentarily.

Goodies from the Earth

I recommend picking a raw material (or “RM”) company as your first company, it generally requires less money usage up front and is much more straight forward. You hire 10 people to dig or mine up whatever RM industry you went into, and the raw materials go directly into your company’s inventory, and they come ready to sell. It may take a few days to pay off, as there are a lot of raw material companies in the U.S., and the sell prices for an single unit of RM is simple pennies. Here's what a raw material company's control panel looks like:

As you can see, there are some things you need to know about on this screen.

Your Stock is your company's "inventory", where the fruits of your employees' labor goes. This is where you can see how many RMs you have available to put into market offers.

Your Money Account is the amount of USD (or the local currency of your company) you have in your company accounts. Your profits go directly into this, and the wages you pay your employees go directly out of it. More on company accounts and hiring employees in a couple sections.

Your Staff is your paid workforce. You need other citizens to harvest the RMs for you. RM companies require no more and no less than 10 employees for maximum productivity.

Your Current Market Offers is what you have for sale on the marketplace right now. If there's no offers open, you're not selling anything.

Crafting 101

Crafting products is a little more complicated than harvesting raw materials, but the products are more expensive and the profits are bigger looking. Baking bread and the like is the equivalent of fast money, fast cars, and fast women in eRepublik. The basics are the same: you have a USD account, a staff of 10, and market offers to make. However, you have two stocks in a product company: raw materials and products. You have to buy raw materials from an RM company, which your staff automatically crafts into products, which goes into your product stock which is ready for sale. If you own an RM company too, you can buy your own stock.

Your Raw Material Stock is how much raw material you have for crafting. Your staff uses those raw materials when they work, contributing to Product Progress. Most employees will be able to finish a product or two on their own workload, and then another employee will finish whatever the last was working on and contribute to a new one, so no productivity is ever wasted. Everytime it goes up to 100%, you get another product in your Product Stock to send to your market offers.

Products also carry a bit of a fun part, you're allowed to customize what you make. If you have food, you can make it heal health or happiness, if you have a weapon company you can make it impossible to hit or change the ammo from lead to nukes 😉. To do this, you press that little gear button next to your product in the picture above. Doing so will lead you to this screen:

The more capital you have to upgrade your company, the better products you can make. Mine here is "quality 1", and it only gets 30 points (in food terms, this means it can only heal three points of health or happiness per product). If I was to shell out a ton of gold and go up to quality 5, I could make my bread heal 10 health and 5 happiness or vice versa. Industries react differently to quality products, food and moving tickets sell well coming from lower quality companies, and weapons have a popular high quality market. Do your research!

Licenses

You'll notice a link under your market offers that says "Buy market license". These are permanent, 20-gold permits that allow you to export your products into foreign markets. Primarily, if you see that your good is selling poorly in your company's country but extremely well in another one, you can buy a license to try and bolster your profits. You have to take into account that country's import tax (which you'll have to pay) and their alliance alignment. If they're a hostile country, they may embargo your company's home country, rendering your license moot.

Wrap-up

Thanks for reading (or at least scanning 😁 through this handy dandy guide, I hope you found it informative. Don't forget to vote, please 😁. Just a few key points to refresh you:

- Use an Organization to build your company on.
- It costs 5 gold to make an organization, and 20 gold (40g available) to make a company.
- Do not make a Hospital or Defense System company, ever.
- Do not make a raw material company on a low or medium region.
- Productivity peaks at 10 employees. Those employees can be of any skill level you choose.
- If your total product sales aren't beating out the wages and taxes, make a staffing change or wait out the market.
- Licenses cost 20 gold each and allow you to export your goods overseas.
- Do not buy a license to export to a hostile country.

Remember, the U.S. still needs congressional blockers. If you have U.S. citizenship, are level 13, and can stay in the country until the 25th, go volunteer for it! Right nao!

Until next time,
