[TIHCE] Halloween! Halloween?

Day 4,356, 09:59 Published in Hungary Hungary by taleum

I wrote this article to inform the citizens of other countries about the Hungarian “Halloween”, referring to this article. Sorry for my bad English.

The Halloween is an authentic Irish celebration on 31th of October, mostly celebrated in Anglo-Saxon countries. (Fix me if I’m wrong)

In the Hungarian history, we don’t have this ceremony at all. It became lately popular because of commercial and marketing pressure (just like Valentine’s Day; money became more important as tradition). So, there are no scary or funny Halloween stories in Hungary I could share with you.

We have in Hungary All Saints' Day (in Latin: Festum Omnium Sanctorum) on the 1st of November. This is a Christian festival celebrated in honor of all the saints, known and unknown.

And then, on the 2nd of November there is All Souls' Day (in Latin: Commemoratio omnium Fidelium Defunctorum) which is also a Christian festival, we typically remember deceased relatives on this day.

In European culture and so in Hungary, chrysanthemum (sometimes called mums or chrysanths) is a flower of grace and remembrance. On the day of All Souls' Day, the people decorate the graves of their dead loved ones with this (or other) flower. Most of the people also light candles on the graves, and remembers of their dead loved ones.

So it’s a quiet and peaceful celebration, not really like Halloween.

Nowadays, the boundaries between the two days are blurred, the people visiting the first and/or the second they the graves.

I don't expect to win anything on this event, but maybe somebody will find interesting this piece of the Hungarian culture.
