[Pfeiffer] Congress and the Speakership

Day 2,197, 06:55 Published in USA USA by Pfeiffer.

For those who have known me a while, my last two articles are a bit different from my normal publications.

Giving Congress a Purpose presents new and old players alike with a different take on what and how our Congress is and should be. The days of testing game mechanics and trying to perfect our play are over. Now we must stick to what we know works, and serve as the front line in welcoming any and all new players to our corner of the game.

(New Players) Join us on IRC is an invitation to all players, especially those new to the game, to join the community fully. I open up my personal IRC channel #Pfeiffer to any and all who just want somewhere to talk to people. eRepublik or not, the room is turning into a very reliable place to go for solid conversation: We've grown from a very quiet room of 5 people, to 20+ people carrying on conversations throughout the day.

Congressional Election TODAY

My Party President, gnilraps, has (in his limited infinite) wisdom, decided to place me first on the USWP ballot. Apparently he thought that wouldn't cause riots in the street.

So yea, vote for USWP. I'm basically guaranteed a seat, so I don't have to say that...but you should vote for the USWP anyway. We've consistently produced the most reliable and dedicated leadership this country has been lucky enough to have. I won't list them all, ligtreb and scrabman should be enough to justify my statement. So do it.

Announcement Time: Pfeiffer for Speaker

I've posted my platform on the eUS Forums here. I'm posting it here so that people who don't check the forum regularly can join the discussion if they would like to do so.

With my return to Congress for the umpteenth time imminent, I've decided to run for Speaker. I honestly don't expect to win, as I've avoided the backchannels and deal making that happens before these elections, but I'm standing anyway. Before the meat of the 'platform' (as it is), if you are interested in serving as Deputy Speaker, message me here or on the forum. I will not be promising the job to anyone ahead of time as is normally done, applications will be accepted from any American.

Now, what I'd like to do with the position is simple: Teach some history, add a bit of perspective, and improve the general understanding of where we are as a body, and how we got here.

Why? Cause it's annoying having to answer the same questions over and over. Sometimes it's obscure stuff, but mostly it's things people should know. So, I'm going to hold a series of Q&A threads over the course of the month. What passes for 'elder statesmen' will generally be answering questions that come up, and then at the reasonable end of each thread (probably about a week or so), Custer will publish the thread in game. I haven't actually asked him if he'll do that, but it's Custer so I figure he will.

Now, as a starting point, give these a once over:

Constitution and Code

Current Active Laws

Congressional Recor😛 Table of Contents

These won't be the only things we'll cover, obviously. Policy positions aren't covered here, and these don't offer some of the history on the longest standing traditions, as we lost that forum in late 2010. I (and whichever other older players might pop up) will be happy to offer as much of our institutional knowledge as possible, as well as whatever other insights we can manage to drag out of the recesses of our mind.

If you read the media, you've probably seen my recent articles:

In the first, I call on Congress to act as the front line in new player education.
In the second, I invite new and old players alike to join a real and (hopefully) long term conversation on IRC.

Clearly, I plan on working with the Departments of Educations and Interior to ensure that they have the support they need and that Congressmen are doing their job to welcome and educate any and all new players who express interest in learning more about this game, and our community. Some other small housecleaning will need to be done, updating the list of Speakers, cleaning the Public and Private boards, and sprucing up the archives a bit, basic things.

I've done this job (and pretty much every other one) before, and will use the month to be as instructional as possible. I'm happy to take any questions you might have here as well.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of that. I know it was long.

Obligatory Taylor being wonderful

As always, if needed, I remain

Yours,

~Pfeiffer

New players should read this series of articles (mostly) written by Mercurius1000. The information is useful and is a good starting point for you.
