WHY CAN PEACE GO WRONG FOR THE WRONG REASONS ("un fleac, m-au ciuruit" :) )

Day 679, 12:11 Published in Russia Romania by 8-3=1

During last couple of days there were some peace discussions between Romania and Russia. This is no secret, as Russian MoFA wanted to inform:

The tone of the article above is however not in line with the tone of the discussions and that is why I would like to write to the Russian people (who need to be informed).

First of all, it was Russia who contacted Romania in order to start peace discussions. This was following an article I wrote on occasion of my appointment as Ambassador of Romania.

It is correct that Romania offered peace. I came in peace and this is what we wanted. Not because we are weak, but because we believe in correct Romanian-Russian relations.

Someone who knows the rules of the game will realise that the peace we offered unconditionally was only for Russia benefit. Romania MPPs were protecting our allies in case they decided to attack Russia. Not anymore in case we signed peace with Russia. By signing peace with Romania, Russia could be safe from attacks from our allies. We were giving this without asking anything in return.

Peace signed by Russia meant not so much to Romania. We have no common border with Russia, so an attack was not imminent. Also in case we are attacked by Peace forces, with all due respect Russia is not the deciding force (I believe at this point we have to fear more Hungary or Indonesia than we have to fear Russia military force). It is correct that we wanted something in return: we wanted to have a serious communication about future improving the relations between Romania and Russia. And we were prepared to give something without asking for something- as explained above.

All we wanted was a brief period of time to be able to explain internally and to our allies the whole concept. 48 hours of peace and tranquillity. We knew this would not go down so well with Romanian congress, same as it will not go down so well with Russian congress. (We were however guaranteed that Russian congress will not say no, this we were not able to guarantee that is why we asked for time). The presidential impeachment in Romania was not foreseen, and this delayed things and put them into new perspective. We asked for extra time to be able to finish with the impeachment and discuss internally with the Congress.

The following events deeply contrast with the spirit of negotiations: the impeachment just finished and less than one hour after Russia attacked in Scandinavia.

This suffocated any effort of dealing with Romania-Russia peace in talks with our allies. The Russian government only calculated 48 hours and decided they are released from pressure and that they can attack. Of course that Hungary and/or Indonesia twisted Russia's arm not to go ahead with peace. But this is not so important.

What is important is that Russia lost an opportunity to gain something without giving anything. This is what the real fact is and this is what the Russian people should know.

I would not like to comment on the following sentence from Russian MoFA: “In the end we have decided to gauge their interest in peace, to which they have responded with exiting the talks.”, but there are serious misinformations included. First of all, Russia approached us for peace talks. Secondly, Russia was stupid to cancel the peace talks as they only benefited Russia. Thirdly, if you offer something for free and it is not accepted- why waste time?

Now the Russian government will have to live with this mistake and perhaps do better planning. Or perhaps new government will do better.
