People still use eUSAforums.com, and a few independent party or MU forums.

IRC died, because it's (happily?) no longer 1997. A few holdouts persist. Most people intent on out of game real time communications use Discord. A few keen individuals (think Pfeiffer) publish a stream on Beam.

Basic essentials are the same as always. Understand game mechanics before you act, and have a large number of active friends. Short answer: join a big MU and a top 3 party.
