The History of the Atlantis/EDEN Super Aliance

Day 803, 06:40 Published in USA USA by Desertfalcon

For those of you who are are new to the game and don't know much about super alliances, EDEN and Phoenix are actually second generation alliances. That is they formed from the remnants of earlier super alliances. With all the turmoil occurring within EDEN over the past few days I thought I would write a bit of a historical article detailing how we got to EDEN and detail the Atlantis/EDEN super alliance, I will try to get an article on the PEACE/Phoenix super alliance later this week.

Back in the beta period there weren't any real super alliances. Up until July 2008 the world consisted of smaller regional alliances such as PANAM and the Northern Alliance. This system worked quite well since there weren't any super alliances to really push the smaller ones around. Then the whole world changed in late July when the first super alliance was born, Atlantis. The alliance was supposed to be a combination of PANAM, the Northern Alliance, Spain, and Romania, however most of PANAM was split on the issue and many South American countries went over to PEACE. Despite the loss of South America, American president Dishmcds soon signed on with the alliance and Atlantis had managed to unite the superpowers of Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the U.S. all in the same alliance.

The leaders of the other smaller regional alliances felt threatened by the formation of Atlantis and they quickly responded by forming their own super alliance, PEACE. by October no other alliances remained and few countries were independent since most thought they needed the protection of a larger alliance group. The two sides then began hashing it out with three major wars occurring between the two which have been dubbed world wars by some. The first was a Romanian invasion of Hungary which despite knocking the Hungarians down to one region, failed. The second was a huge war between Romania and Indonesia over the conquered regions of Russia and China, this also ended in defeat for Atlantis. In the end though, it wasn't PEACE that caused Atlantis to collapse.

During the spring of 2009, sometime after world war 2, Sweden decided to invade Germany. Now the problem with this was that Germany (who had been invaded by Sweden twice before) was trying to become a member of Atlantis and was a trial member at the time. Germany had MPPs with several Atlantis countries including the U.S., the U.K., and Canada and many of these nations tried to remain neutral despite high public support for Germany except Canada who openly supported Germany. Despite the best efforts of alliance leaders things just didn't work out and the alliance soon crumbled with the U.S., the U.K. and Canada breaking off. The European sector of Atlantis then banded together to form EDEN (European Defense and Economic Network).

The three western Atlantis nations then tried a brief experiment in neutrality while trying to form their own alliance. One popular suggestion was the formation of Fortis, an alliance of the U.S., Canada, Spain, the U.K., and Ireland. Canada and the U.S. were on board to join however Spain stuck with EDEN and the U.K. eventually went over to PEACE which really hurt the alliance. Then during the PEACE invasion, EDEN came to the aid of the U.S. and Canada and soon after the war ended both the U.S. and Canada accepted offers to join a renamed EDEN (Erepublik Defense and Economic Network).

Now we see another super alliance going through a rough spot much like Atlantis. This isn't as bad as having a war break out between members however, all it takes is one superpower to get upset and leave an alliance for the entire super alliance to collapse. If EDEN were to fall it wouldn't be the end of the world. Obviously it would do a fair amount of damage but we didn't all get enslaved by PEACE when Atlantis fell and PEACE didn't get overrun by EDEN when their alliance fell. Every alliance will eventually fall and in this game its rare to see one last much longer then a year. While I still think its likely that this whole thing will blow over and that EDEN will remain intact, we need to face the realization that discontent and arguing amongst nations in an alliance poses more of a threat then enemies on the battlefield.
