Residency - A small town in the Netherlands
Shawtyl0w
Dear Citizens,
Whether it's in a metropolis or a small town, there's no place like home. Thus, we are glad to introduce the newest update of the New World - eRepublik Cities! While they have existed since the beginning of times, they will now get new roles.
A man's home is his castle... in a manor of speaking. Starting Day 3,468, you can set your Residence in one of the towns and cities for some exciting bonuses!
But before we cut the ribbon, let us explain how Cities work. If you like the thought of establishing your residence in a city, good news! You will be able to benefit from better houses both in terms of house durability, energy pool size and energy recovery for the time period you spend in that city.
Benefits
The residents will benefit from increased energy recovery speed and the extra energy pool as long as they stay in the city of residence, according to the chart below.
Choose your residence wisely - when traveling away from the city of residence, the recoverable energy bonus is not available and the extra energy pool is only active for 30 minutes from the moment of departure.
Once a citizen becomes a resident of a city, they can no longer turn back to their “nomad” status. The houses they have active in the cities will benefit of the durability bonus. The houses usage of a resident citizen will no longer have the option to be paused.
City Size
The cities are grouped in 5 tiers based on the number of citizens who are residents of the city. Their size not only influences the values of residential tax and the property tax but it also affects the durability bonus of the inhabited houses in the city as per the table below.
Establishing a residence
In order to establish a residence in a city, a citizen needs to travel to the city, apply for a residential permit and pay the one time residential tax and the prorata property tax (if they have active houses).
The residential permit is approved automatically and the active houses will be transferred to the new city if the citizen can pay the above taxes.
Local Taxes
The municipality can levy taxes to fund the city budget
The residential tax - depends of the size of the city and is collected when a citizen establishes their residence in a city
The property tax - is collected for each house based on its global market price and the actual (remaining) durability of the house. It is paid when a citizen moves in a house in their resident city. While the property tax will initially have an universal value, in the future it will be set by the mayor and the city council.
City Budget
The city budget is founded by the currency collected from the local taxes and a subsidy from the taxes collected at the government level.
The current subsidy is 10% of the country income and divided equally between all the cities of the country. In the future the congress will be able to increase the value of the subsidy
The mayor and city council are the ones who decide on how to use the money in the local budget.
City Size
The cities are grouped in 5 tiers, based on the number of residents each city has. The values of the residential tax and the property tax, as well as the durability bonus of the inhabited houses will vary from one tier to another.
Local elections
The local elections module will be added as the next step in the following weeks.
My friends,
My advice for you is simple, if you move around a lot and use high quality more expensive houses to boost your energy by turning them on and off when you are at full recovery do not get a city of residence yet! It will cost you a lot of money since "once a house is activated you can't turn it off again."
Move towards small cities(towns), even better move to cities in eNL so the local budget gets a tiny financial boost while the cities are very likely to be small. You can stay in eNL since most of the DO's are set on battles from allies we have MPPs with.
Another reason to move to small cities, the durability of your house will get a 20% increase while at larger cities this bonus decreases.
Also keep in mind that you have holding companies. You can't work in them if you aren't located in the region. Setting up residency in a city where your holding companies are located will prevent you moving around all the time.
I hope this helped you make up your mind on the place you want to live!
Yours truly,
Shawtyl0w

Don't make a rushed decision, base your choice on your style of playing this game.
* Most citizens should indeed get recidency (preferred in eNL).
* Some citizens might want to stay a 'nomad' since they can then turn on/off high quality houses.
* Some citizens want to become a citizen and buy all houses to get a super high energy bonus so they can fight continuously
Voted.
what's best to do when you are a 2 clicker and have a holding? Will living in a residence in eNL make you have to travel everytime?
As long as gov MPP policy is good and the MU you are in sets DOs on MPP wars you don't have to travel.
For a two clicker with probably a Q1 house active i suggest getting residency.
If u wanna reduce activity to the minimum, set your residence where your holdings are.

"The mayor and city council are the ones who decide on how to use the money in the local budget."
I am sure, the budget will be used to pay for various upgrades to the city which the citizens benefit from, like the Central Park. Maybe there will be more buildings like that, just with different effects. So there could be an upsite to living in a crowded city.
Good point,
Though I believe this is mostly interesting for players who are very active, those who aren't will most likely not use the extra energy etc. They will benefit kore from the 20% extra house durability.
Is it just me or do more players find it very strange the energy recovery bonus, like the work tickets, stays constant?
Energy recovery should imo have been 2 on Q1 house and rise to 4, 6, 8, 10 on the higher Q houses, just like work tickets should be 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to justify the redicoulously high prices. As it is now I estimate Q1 will be the one used, just like for generating work tickets and the others will hardly be used. Even less due to the stay active part. It's likely this will drop fighting activity as people that have some houses active will refuse to move.
I for one will stay a nomad for now. Plus our 2-clickers should also be very withholding with becoming a resident imo as why on earth should you activate a house? The only benefit for now would be the 20% extra lifetime. Extra recovery you don't need as you already recover more than you use if you're 2-clicking. The extra lifetime is nice ofc yet if you play it well you already gained money on a Q1 so no real need albeit prices rose significantly after the update. Way more than 20% so having Q1 active might not be wise at all for you atm, not even on a 20% durability. Better wait for future changes and the dust to settle down a bit before you decide I think.
