[Petition] Vote Buying is Bad

Day 1,731, 08:25 Published in United Kingdom Norway by Major Lee Hung
What is vote buying?

Vote buying is, to sum it up, paying other people to give your article votes that you would otherwise not have gotten. It is typically done through a third party service which is used by several hundred people, and costs pretty large sums of currency.

Why is it Bad?

Often, in the eUK for example, vote buying will push an article straight to #1. For example, the current article which has had votes bought has over 700 votes; typically a very successful eUK article will have around 50-60 votes. This means that good quality articles are losing visibility to people who insist on ruining the media module simply because they lack the ability to create good articles.

People would argue that this is much like advertising - you merely pay for visibility on your article. Very few however realise just how much damage they cause their reputation by using this service. I for one will never vote/subscribe somebody I know uses these services.

What Can Be Done?

Articles which have clearly had votes bought should be marked and deleted as spam. It is usually obvious by the sudden 500 votes in 3 hours, and the fact that the number of votes are disproportionately higher. This will eventually discourage people from using these services and return the media module back to a fair, free and open place for us all.
