Every year, on 9 March, the Orthodox Church celebrates the 40 martyrs.

According to tradition, today, the housewives are cooking «martyrs ». They can be prepared like a pie with nuts and honey



Or in the shape of « 8 », boiled in water with spices and nuts.



The tradition also says that in this day you must drink 40 or 44 glasses of wine



Which is an ancient spring ritual, believing that the wine drunk today is transforming into blood, which gives men power for the rest of the year.
They say the day of the 40 martyrs must be celebrated by all Christians which don’t have a saint’s name. In this day, everybody must be happy and well disposed.
