Empress Day is a holiday set up by the Secretariat of Culture and Events under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It is a holiday that celebrates Japanese pop culture by electing an 'Anime Empress' who is a sort of representative of Japanese pop culture for us all to enjoy in celebration for the holiday.

It is not related to Japan's constitutionally-mandated Emperor, His Imperial Majesty Kokawayoshi Makoto. He is the guardian of Japan's cultural heritage and history, while the Anime Empress is an embodiment of pop culture.
