The end of IRC? Try Telegram

Today we were talking on the IRC with a few friends. We all arrived to the same conclusion, the IRC is old fashioned and not an “efficient” way to communicate with the rest of the community. Nowadays we all have smartphones with Internet connections and spend less time on our computers because of that, appart from the obvious flaws the IRC itself has.
There’s where we have seen an opportunity, what if I could talk with other eRep people through my phone, because let’s be honest, the ingame system messages sucks quite a lot, without having to let them my personal details?
Lucky you, we’ve found you a solution, and guess what’s better, it’s free. We will try to move the eRep community to Telegram. For those who are not familiar with it, Telegram is a chat tool that can be either used in PC and mobile phone where you can either create a group chat (as if it was an IRC channel) or talk individually to people (as if it was a query). If you want to create an account on your phone you will need to introduce your phone number, but no one who does not already have you on their agenda will see it.
We know it’s a titanic enterprise and that it won’t be easy, but no goal who has not been tried has ever been achieved.
The only problem with this is that it’s not that easy to find the “channels”. From now on we will just call it groups, mainly because it’s more accurate. To find the group you need an admin to include you or if the group is public the link of it. In our case the link is public, don’t worry.
The first idea we had is that there will be a public channel for all eRep players and if we see a lot of people is interested then each country could create its own public channel, if they wish. Similar as it works IRC nowadays but more accessible. If you want to create groups for your MUs, Political parties, friends or whatever it’s up to you, you will see it’s really easy to create a group.
As said, we know it will be hard, but we are willing to put a last effort to continue enjoying this game, we all have great friends who have know here and would like to talk to them in a more easy way.

Yes, but i don't speak dutch 😛
The IRC has been left for dead countless times and in the end, 8 years later, it's the only thing that stands the test of time.
It may be old-fashioned and spartan, and you can't send pictures of your favourite dank memes, but it's simple, open and versatile. It's simple and open, because any player is just a click away from starting chatting with others, without having to create any account, waiting for an admin to invite them to the group, giving away RL data (phone numbers...), etc.
And it's versatile because with a little of research you are ready to create your own channel and set up a privilege system which, even today, no other competitor can match.
There are many IRC clients for Android and iOS, so that it's not really a reason.
We tried migrating to Slack in Spain. After some time, most activity has returned to the IRC. I don't think that splitting the community again will bring any good.

I hate IRC on the phone. Once I gathered Telegrams of enough people, I will leave IRC. That will be in a week more or less.

Do you feel you can effectively perform your presidential duties without IRC?
Sure Dimlight Hero, this days I'm gathering Telegrams of people I need to talk often. I also have some Whatsapps of people I need to talk.
Obviously if there's a meeting with someone specific who does not want to use the App I will join and talk with him at a specific time. But If my plans go as expected I might not be dependant of it anymore. I only do business with 7-8 people on IRC, not more. If you visited it more often you'll probably see in what did it become 😉
After 6 months of migrating from IRC to telegram I can say the only advantage of IRC is the management of channels (i mean different access types, topic, .call command, etc)

IRC Cloud for Mobile is amazing enough that's it's not an inconvenience to use.
Telegram looks like all the other new messenger apps lately. Slack, WhatsApp, etc.
In whatsapp you must have one's phone number to contact. These IDs in telegram make it more easy for games
The big advantage Telegram has over other alternatives, like Discord, is the players that take the in game battles serious likely already use Telegram (or Pushbullet) so no other apps needed. Also history is stored in a legal way even if you're not online (A huge advantage over IRC where history is only x lines old unless you use illegal means).
The downside would be RL data will be linked to yous in game profile which I don't like at all.
One last question; Who's using the channel you refer to?
For the moment 9 people. We just started it yesterday and it's kind of an experiment to see how it goes.

Oh god pls no, I can barely do Facebook and Twitter, let alone anything else. I once created an instagram account, I don't even know what that means.
I also created one instagram account. I had one follower, who I followed back. Then I tried to delete it. IDK if it worked.
