Super Alliances - For Better or Worse?

Day 788, 04:47 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by AltmerVampire

Why hello there y’all.

I’ve been planning to write an article about the world of super alliances for quite a while now. And saying as it is the weekend, and I am slightly less busy than usual, I’ve decided now seems to be a good time.

Foreword

The New World has lived in the shadows of super alliances for most of its military life. From the Northern Alliance, to ATLANTIS, to EDEN. From FIST, to PEACE GC, to Phoenix. A vast majority of all the nations in eRep have joined an alliance at one stage or another, or have suffered the consequences of neutrality. Because, despite what either alliance may say, they are not perfect. They are all far from perfect.

In a world where war drives our economy, our interests and our daily lives, many countries see it as essential to join with other nations for self-protection. There are a few nations which try to be neutral, and hope that the alliances leave them alone. As we can see from China, India and many other nations, this is not the case. In a world driven by war, there is no such thing as a defensive alliance, only who can destroy their enemy (and innocent bystanders) before their enemy can strike back.

Many things actually.

Am I saying war is bad? Am I saying nations shouldn’t try to conquer each other? Am I even saying we should abolish all alliances and fight one-on-one? No. Alliances are essential for war and a sense of international community. Super alliances, such as Phoenix and EDEN, are not. Which will be the main study of the following articles I am going to write; to consider whether super alliances should stay, be abolished, or be replaced with many smaller alliances such as Sol or ALA (but as efficient as the big boys).

This first article will talk about the history of the alliances; how they got to where they are now, why they are like they are and how deeply entrenched they are in their communities, not so much the borders of the world.

The second article will deal with the positives and negatives of super alliances, including benefits for member nations, effects on neutral nations, and general shizzle.

Finally, the third article will concentrate on what the world would be like without super alliances, and how this may impact on global politics.

This series may very well end up as a massive failure and no one notices it, but meh, I’m cool with that. So anywho, let’s begin shall we?

History of the alliances

EDEN through the ages
Phoenix through the ages

EDEN.

EDEN's flag.

EDEN’s past could be traced largely back to the Northern Alliance, an alliance of Northern European nations, along with the USA and Romania. Other Beta alliances which contained traces of EDEN’s past can be found in the shape of PANAM and part of the MA (although it was largely divided between pre-Phoenix and pre-EDEN nations).

I should note that Russia wasn't a part of the alliance, merely conquered by a member.

Most members of the before mentioned alliances (with the possible exception of MA) formed ATLANTIS officially on the 22nd August 2008. The first of the history of two super alliances began.

The alliance went swimmingly, being the stronger of the two for quite a while in its history and enjoying domination of the globe and security and safety for its members. Wars were won across the globe. Romania became one of the greatest powers in the world, battling Indonesia as the two world powers, and ATLANTIS nations grew strong.

But many nations didn’t have much war. Or much fun, so in May 2009, KalleHolm, the then President of Sweden declared war on fellow ATLANTIS nation, Germany, in hopes of sparking a babyboom. Not only did Sweden not get a babyboom, the war split ATLANTIS, resulting in the end of the alliance.

ATLANTIS' now defunct flag.

The nations that had been divided by the Third Germany-Sweden War were not to be split in their friendship however, with all nations working closely together. It was now that the USA tried to bring their alliance to the table, Fortis. An alliances of the Western bloc of ATLANTIS but with Ireland thrown in to. The alliance never got off the ground, however its counterpart in the Eastern bloc, did. The European Defensive and Economic Network was born, consisting of mainly Eastern European nations and the Scandinavian ones.

Eventually, after the PEACE Invasion of North America, Canada joined EDEN, forcing it to be renamed the eRepublik Defensive and Economic Network. Later on, several other nations such as the USA and Australia joined up. EDEN was ATLANTIS with one or two extras, and without Germany and the United Kingdom.

Phoenix.

Phoenix's flag. Different colour to PEACE's and with a phoenix.

The foundations of Phoenix can be found in FIST, an alliance of Asian nations containing notable members such as Pakistan and Indonesia. They were the initial counterpart to the Northern Alliance, but due to the other two alliances, could never have been said to be the two dominant.

On the 26th August 2008, all FIST nations signed the charter of PEACE GC, unofficially dissolving the alliance. Many nations from the MA and PANAM joined PEACE GC, creating the second military alliance, one tasked with being the counterpart to ATLANTIS’ power.

FIST flag.

PEACE and ATLANTIS danced around each other for months. Wars were though, nations joined either side, with the occasional defection. PEACE initially stood as a defensive alliance, however, on achieving power it did what all alliances end up doing, as in trying to conquer the world. The PEACE invasion of North America was a huge success, at one point wiping out Canada and leaving the USA with a single state.

After that, PEACE began to falter. It met its match in the newly formed EDEN, and began to falter severely. The alliance was rebranded a defensive alliance, but many nations still left it, and soon after, Phoenix was officially announced. Strictly speaking, PEACE is technically still alive but we shan’t dwell on that any longer then…

Where We Are Now.
Top

So here we are, Phoenix and EDEN bitterly fight against each other on a daily basis.

But why so much hatred between the two?

Both alliances have hurt each other in their long history, both have been conquered and have conquered. They have fought alongside each other at points and against each other. Their member nations are so used to fighting with their friends, it would be inconceivable to let their enemies come near their lands, or to actually dissolve the alliance and fight themselves.

Bless.

This is the end of Part 1, as I said, Part 2 will look at the positives and negatives of the two alliances. If this is in any way interesting to you, please vote and subscribe to get the next part of the series.

Have fun all.
