Living the Dream!

Day 1,297, 21:12 Published in Australia Australia by Chris Carnage

People of eAustralia, followers of the liberal-democratic traditions, champions of capitalism, I have great news for you. We've finally made it, WE'RE LIVING THE CAPITALIST DREAM! Why should we be so pleased at a time when our eCountry is about to be wiped from the map for the umpteenth time this month? I'm glad you asked! Allow me to elaborate.

Let's start by agreeing on the reasons for our colonisation. I've seen some people blaming eIndonesia for hating us, for being bullies, racists, etc, but that just isn't what this is about. The eIndonesian government have explained it, their people understand it, and most of us here in eAustralia understand it - they are invading us because it makes sense! We have some resources that will give them production bonuses. While they could look elsewhere for these resources we present a great opportunity by being relatively powerless and close to them. It is the cheapest way to get the resources they need. Nothing mean and nasty about what they're doing, it just makes sense, right? Any amateur economist will tell you they are simply behaving as 'rational actors'.

The economic colonisation of eAustralia is precisely the outcome one would predict given a capitalist eWorld order. Capitalism is darwinian, only the strong shall survive. Capitalism knows no nationality, it knows no community, it knows no justice. The strong shall survive, the weak shall perish, productivity shall improve and damn the consequences. Cousin Lenin once said that "imperialism is the highest form of capitalism", in fact he made it the title of a book and while the details of his rationale don't directly apply to the eWorld his assertion surely rings true. For all the waffle proponents of capitalism sprout about individual freedoms and choice, the only freedoms that capitalism offer is the freedom of the strong to exploit the weak, the freedom for the powerful to exercise their power unfettered against the vulnerable. It is about the centralisation of power in the hands of a few at an ever-increasing scale.

Capitalism is not about free competitive choices among people who are reasonably equal in their buying and selling of economic power, it is about concentrating capital, concentrating economic power in very few hands using that power to trash everyone who gets in their way.
David Korten

eAustralia does not have the population, the raw strength, to do unto eIndonesia what they are doing unto us. What about our allies? No disrespect to many of our allies who have fought hard for us, but they are rational actors as well. There are higher value battles to fight, a greater strategic return on their investment, than a regional backwater populated with friendly but otherwise valueless citizens. Nothing personal, I know many have fought hard for us out of affection and loyalty when there were higher value targets (irrational actors?) and we have deep gratitude for that, but the inevitability of the conquest of our resources can only be delayed for so long.

The argument that the free market will produce the best possible outcome assumes that the best possible outcome is the systemic exploitation and oppression of the powerless at the hands of the powerful, exactly the situation we find ourselves in again.

Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone.
John Maynard Keynes

I can report that eAustralia is now officially a casualty of capitalism. So cheer up people, we're living the dream!

For those who might feel disheartened by ending up on the losing side of the capitalist game, maybe it's time to try changing the rules. I don't have all the answers, but I know it is time that we put aside the capitalist, free-market oriented ideals that have enslaved and betrayed us time and again and look for a new model. Time to break the shackles, behave irrationally, and find ways to make this cheap bucket of resources we call a country a very expensive target.

We're doing it already, but maybe without thinking about it. After all, if we were all rational actors we would be citizens of a large, safe world power with all the resource bonuses we can eat. Yet here we are, fighting side by side for something that makes no sense, and that surely is the most liberating fact of all.

Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.
Arundhati Roy
