The reason that the economy is currently in the toilet - the admins either changed the programming for or completely deactivated the Buybot.
The Buybot was a device that the admins put into effect to compensate for the overproduction in the economy. The Bot purchases products at a certain price thereby artificially stimulating the economy. Unfortunately this also pumped (probably millions of) local currency into the economy and exchange rates are bottomed out.
Some see it as urban legend but those of us who know much about the economy know differently. Until the last update we could post large amounts of products to the market and it would be purchased at regular intervals. We could even sell these products at prices above the lowest available price on the market, based on a simple formula dependent on the default price.

It seems that this is no longer the case. They broke the buybot :/

I think I'd rather have the markets crash and return to a real player based economy, than deal with PlatoBot crap.
I suspect the bot is still buying, just at lower prices. Then again, it might kick back on and wipe the markets at any given moment. Who's to say.
Very true. Unfortunately we just don't know. To my knowledge the admins have never even acknowledged the existence of the bot mechanism, much less how it works.

Chaos breeds order. Maybe if they left the economy to the players things would sort themselves out.
Maybe we'll get to see.

Looks like the the large companies (L5+) can hire people at 100+IEP.
Good way to get gold out of people IMO.

Being able to make everyone work in the same Company is what really screwed the economy after the last change, wages rose to unsustainable levels, now that its fixed we will go through another period of turmoil while the excess weapons are used up and wages return to normal levels.
Then we will have the shortage.due to worker restrictions in the company's, and prices will rise again for weapons & RM and then normality might resume again to the marketplace.
Well, for good or for bad, it looks like things will be back to the normal soon. It's back:
