Happy good news day! We have been going for 10 weeks, 7 more than I originally thought I would last. To celebrate, see the bottom of the article for a lovely giveaway package!

Cafe Gives Hope to Disabled Workers

Maureen Stanko always felt her son, Nick, had so much to give. Nick is 20 and is on the autism spectrum and despite her knowing he had so much to give, what he would do after graduation kept his mom up at night.

"I was lying in bed one night at 3 a.m. I was thinking about, 'Oh man, what's going to happen to him.' You know? It's like it's coming, it's like impending now," Stanko told CBS News.

She brought her worry to Nick's therapist, Tyler Kammerle, who told her he had a goal of opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. They teamed up with philanthropist Kathy Opperman to make that dream a reality, and about two years later, "so much to give" was no longer just Stanko's mantra. It was a restaurant.

They opened the So Much To Give Inclusive Cafe in Cedars, Pennsylvania in January 2023. They employ 63 people — 80% of employees have a disability – and they work as greeters, food runners, sous chefs, dishwashers and servers.

But the cafe is not only a place to work, it's become a safe space for others with disabilities to dine.

"We never even took Nick to a restaurant before this cafe opened. Because when we used to it wasn't worth it. Because we would spend all this money to go out to eat to be completely stressed out," Stanko said. "This cafe has taught Nick how to sit in a restaurant. Because now we have a place to go, where if he stands up and starts hopping like a bunny or clapping or yelling, nobody cares."

Cytokines Provide Cancer Treatment Breakthrough

A new way to safely boost immune cells to fight cancer—avoiding harmful side-effects such as hair loss—has been developed.

Scientists at Virginia Tech devised the ground-breaking immunotherapy to localise cancer-killing cytokines in tumours, improving the effectiveness of current treatments.

Immunotherapy involves harnessing the power of the body’s immune system to fight potentially deadly cancer cells. The researchers at the school’s College of Engineering have found a way to revamp a treatment procedure into an innovative practice.

Their approach involves activating the immune cells in the body and “reprogramming” them to attack and destroy the cancer cells. Stimulating the body’s immune system to attack tumours has been for years a promising alternative to traditional cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, which can’t distinguish between healthy cells and cancer cells

Prof. Tong says the delivery of cytokines can “jump-start” immune cells in the tumour, but overstimulating healthy cells can also cause severe side effects.

“Our strategy not only minimises cytokine-induced harm to healthy cells, but also prolongs cytokine retention within the tumour. This helps facilitate the recruitment of immune cells for targeted tumour attack.”

She says the next step involves combining the new, localised cytokine therapy method with commercially available, FDA-approved checkpoint blockade antibodies, which reactivate the tumour immune cells that have been silenced—so they can fight back the cancer cells.

Tiger King Rescues Enjoy New Start in San Diego

A San Diego wildlife sanctuary is proud to report that two of the 69 tigers rescued from the infamous collection of the ‘Tiger King’ Joe Exotic are thriving at their Alpine, CA location.

Participating in the rescue of the cats, it took Lions, Tigers, and Bears Animal Sanctuary 3 years to help the pair of Bengal tigers, Jem and Zoe, to put on normal weight and get back to their wild ways, but that perseverance has paid off.

Netflix broke the world of the US tiger trade to the world with a landmark docu-series Tiger King in 2021, which centred around the private menagerie collection of Joe Exotic, and his difficulties with a woman named Carole Baskin, the owner of Big Cat Rescue.

An organised effort to relocate his 69 captive tigers to sanctuaries around the country saw Lions, Tigers, and Bears (LT😎 take in two adults Jem and Zoe.

“Their condition was dire, marked by severe malnutrition, emaciation, dull skin, and other issues,” LTB told Fox News 5 San Diego. “The trauma from long-term abuse led to the development of uncharacteristic behaviour, such as not eating for days at a time.”

However, LTB’s efforts succeeded, and after three years the pair are “living their best lives in their forever home.”
