Aussie Rules: The Debate-O-Rama

Day 2,725, 00:16 Published in Australia Australia by Ronin2007

Hey all!

So I mentioned I played Aussie Rules (not AFL) and there was some disagreement in the comments over the great-ness of my preferred sport. So we're going debate it in the comments.

This is how it works, I start the debate with my opinion, then you respond with your own opinion in the comments, simple!
Just to clarify if anybody is interested, I go for the Sydney Swans.

Point 1. Contact
In the good old days there was players who would play with punctured organs.

The extent of contact rules are : don’t hit him in the head, below the knees, and don’t push him in the back (can tackle from behind, just not push forward onto face).

When my father was my age (13 what a scandal!) there was a team that knocked him out every time he played them, never stopped him from playing, he still plays today.

Point 2. Skills
Aussie rules require a wide variety of skills such as:
Kicking, Handballing, Reading The Play, Holding your feet, Manipulating The Oppositions Players etc. etc.

I could rattle of skills all day.

Point 2.1 Kicking
Kicking requires lots of skill in Aussie Rules you’re not just booting it down field, you have to hit your target, and if you miss, guess where you’re sprinting too? That’s right where ever you kicked it. You have to fine tune your kicking skills to perfection, I still haven’t perfected it yet and I’m coming up on my 4th year playing footie.
Point 2.2 Handballing
Some may say this is simple but it isn’t, you have to keep your head cool and handball properly, not just dole out a hospital pass, and you have to be able to use both hands, which is awkward.
Point 2.3 Reading the Play
Absolutely vital, every player needs this skill; Aussie Rules is an extremely quick sport and you need to be in the right spot at the right time, meaning you have to read the play.
Point 2.4 Holding Your Feet
Some might not consider this a skill but trust me, it is, you sprinting headfirst at a ball you need to get down low enough to pick it up, without stopping and most likely will be bumped (sounds light, it really isn’t) and you have to keep going.
Point 2.5 Manipulating the Opposition
This can be when you are trying to get ready to lead or when you are sprinting head first at them, this is used to create space for yourself and keep it.

I could keep going but his is already a long one, so congrats if you made it to this point🙂
