I am not so sure, but I think they agreed on that back in 2011 or something, when support for independence was much lower. I think if back then, situation was close as today, they wouldn't let them decide.
Yes indeed was a good gesture of UK to make it legal the decision whatever it will be
Cataluna, Flanders and some other few may follow too..
I just hope the Russians are not behind the funding of the Yes campaign to legitimate the takeover on Ukraine (Crimeia and maybe some others) -- Their referendum was considered illegal and maybe they want to shake things...

the situation of flanders is different, because flemish people are the majority in belgium, not a minority 😛
and the referendum in crimea fails not only on legality but also on fairness. a vote must be free and fair to be considered democratic.
the initial uprising in the crimea can be considered not fair on those who did not participate or wanted it?
Organized crime, multinationals, financial powerhouses, all profit from the fact that we still let ourselves be divided by borders which, as history has proven over and over again, will shift. The division causes the real idiots in power(and not only politicians) to remain in power undisturbed, getting richer, whilst the poor blame the poor on the other side of the border.

In Belgium we need create confederalism. Flanders and Wallonia decide what they still want to do together, In my opinion foreign affairs, Brussels and the army need still to be under national control. Everything else like education, structural planning, culture,(already under Flemish and Walloon control) health security and even sports need to be under control of Flanders and Wallonia. Both regions decide about that what is best for their own. And they decide about all this without influence from each other
Why i prefer confederalism like it told in previous message. Well because of what happened in Scotland. The NO side is supported by the whole world, USA, UK and EU all support the NO campaign... This is very sad, but that's why the NO side is so strong. If Flanders do a referendum than also the EU and USA don't allow our independence. So we need go for confederalism because other countries don't have influence than. But my heart say Flemish independence, but it's impossible to do...

Scotland gets more money from the UK than it earns, without London Scotland would have expensive healthcare, low pensions and a weak economy in general + they wouldn't be part of NATO, EU, Commonwealth, ...

@Tommot. my first post was an answer on Rikardoferreira, i told there why Flanders can't be independent and what's the best alternative. In my opinion Scotland did a bad choiche. Both Flanders and Scotland are region who want more freedom, so the one has to do with the other on that point.
Separatist logic: we'll be stronger alone in a 7 billion world.
Fyi in 1 century we'll be 11 billion on earth (according to last studies). Most of this raise will be in Africa, Asia and South America.
How can you compete?
Also, separatist logic: get rid of the poor. Sadly the poor exists only because there are richer men... If you cut poors, new poors come.
Now, confederalism ... We are speaking about european coutrnies right? Scotland/Belgium/Barcelona/Corsica/... Again, we'll be competiting against billions: let's decide village by village and see the outcome.
People... You aren't thinking of the future ! Sure right now it's better for the lucky part (and I say lucky because it is a fact: today's situation in most countries come from the past so no direct causes from the actual workers). But ion the future what will you do with a 5 million population? That might be the workforce task of one plant in China (in the future o/).
