[Pfeiffer] Election Season - Hobson's Choice

Day 2,535, 08:35 Published in USA USA by Pfeiffer.
An article brought to you by the Pfeiffer Presidential Library because you people disappoint me.

This month there are two candidates who are 'worthy' of serious consideration for the Presidency. My use of italics and quotes should tip you off that I find neither option acceptable.

Here's my breakdown of the two we're being presented with:

Dave Gulya - Dave's the current Press Secretary for the BOOBLAR Administration, and has a list of minor positions he'll throw at people when asked for his experience and/or achievements. What it boils down to is this, Dave was in AMP for a while, rose to the position of Chief of Staff, saw that things weren't going very well for the party, and decided to leave for the greener pastures of the Federalists. He says he didn't realize that taking over things was an option, which (in my opinion) either indicates that he is a poor liar, or lacks mental acuity.

As Press Secretary his job is to report on what other people in the cabinet are doing in an (almost) daily thread on the forum. This should have made him acutely aware of the issues during the BOOBLAR Administration and, if he were someone worth following, presented him an opportunity to lend a hand and try and fix some of the things that went off the rails. All he did was take over a position in the USAF which, due to the fact that he holds it now, is largely putting names on a spreadsheet and calling it 'regiment organization'.

Here we are presented with a candidate who has a history of running away when things are difficult, and either being too slow or not caring enough to see an opportunity to help the community by stepping up and at least making an attempt to fix a problem that his rather minor position demanded be right in front of his face.

Reasons to vote for him - He's not the next candidate, and he will be much easier to beat in a month when someone of value can be had in the office.

Oblige - Oblige is Oblige. Most of you will have some idea of who he is and what he's done, so I don't have to spell it all out for you. The problem with Oblige is that he's only a good President when he has people who are both competent at their jobs and completely willing to ignore him. Which begs the question of why we need him at all?

When he gets bored, he micromanages or he does something stupid and breaks stuff. He was run out of the Feds for being himself, out of AMP for trying to buy influence, is more responsible than any other individual for the death of what was a fun, effective, and fairly stable alliance (something the US doesn't see often), and generally feels that his willingness to spend money on the game entitles him to being President from time to time. Being President every so often is the only reason he sticks around, and coincidentally is the only time he feels compelled to try and make a contribution. Which should tell you most of what you need to know about him.

Reasons to vote for him - Dave's cabinet is terrible and most of the people Oblige will hire will in fact be competent and ignore everything he says. If we make him feel speshul for a month, maybe he'll buy us something.

Now you should see why I've titled this article as I have. For those not familiar with Hobson's Choice, read up. tl;dr is that it isn't a choice at all. You're presented with a single option, and that's it.

This makes your choice to accept what is presented, or to do nothing.

Here before us are two candidates very much unworthy of the Presidency, but they are the only options we have.

Which is why I am going to be nominating 'None of the above' in the USWP Primary, and advocating that my party not issue an endorsement. The two options we have are not worthy of bearing our endorsement on election day, and those persons in our party who people think of as being 'ready' for the Presidency (Deepchill and Derphoof, for example) have their real lives getting in the way at this time.

So, if you want a vote from a member of USWP, you're probably going to have to go door to door this month, as 'None of the above' will be the best option on our primary ballot..by a wide margin.

Let's do better next month, America.

Yours,

-Pfeiffer
