Year in Review

Day 2,048, 21:33 Published in USA Canada by olivermellors

A year ago: team eUSA has full bonuses, a population of 13,000, military and economic strength of the first order. Government is secretive.

Tenshibo almost singlehandedly puts together a potential alliance with Spain, Poland, Brazil and the USA. Alarmed that such an alliance would be seen with disfavor, measures are considered which target political adversaries. These measures include new immigration rules.

When eCanada reveals the treaty discussions, the administration cheats and lies the country into war. The eUSA is sharply divided by the war and the administration launches on a policy to target all players who are not real-life Americans, subsequently amended to “real Americans”. Because of serious disagreement over the CNTL policy, and a disquieting coincidence in the selection of Henry P. Arundel as candidate, the presidential election sees RGR and the AFA gaining tremendous traction.

The poison pill of purposely losing bonus regions is aimed at removing players originally from places such as Croatia, France, Germany and to incidentally assist in the battle against the AFA. Many players who would routinely vote against AFA leave the country, total military damage-dealing is reduced, government income is slashed and government finds itself increasingly unable to maintain military spending.

The CNTL treaty comes to nothing. Team eUSA finds itself with few friends, loses face and credibility. Players lose wealth and opportunity. With many loyal players now gone, and the AFA threat looming ever larger, government goes in for a program designated “UNITY”. This includes special meta rules to choose a presidential candidate, multi accounting, targeted dirty tricks and continuous publishing of selective information. The AFA presses/squanders its temporary advantage by engaging in outrageous behavior.

The government moves to repair its diplomatic situation and its military vigour. These efforts are hampered by new international alignments, declining relevance of eUSA’s military, political instability. As players and MUs find their wealth, income and operations affected by the loss of bonuses, government finds itself unable to continue funding military and social programs.

Political dissent is characterized as treason with the result that new voices are not heard, new ideas cast off and new opportunities dismissed out of hand. Political leadership is no longer valued and no longer exercised. War is not greatly feared because it would take over a month to capture all our home tiles. When war comes, the opposing team has planned for this problem of numbers: it plans for multiple countries to invade at once. Now who could have thought of that?

A year later: Tenshibo is now president. He is a nice fellow. His handiwork from a year ago, which looked so promising to some, proved the undoing predicted by many others. It didn't have to be that way, but I suspect the consistent factor throughout has been: lack of government transparency. In all of this story, was there really any reason to be secretive, any reason to be defensive or reactionary, to treat objection dismissively and to abandon friends, good councel and good sense? Perhaps there were good reasons….. that we don’t know about…. ‘cause they are secrets still???
