The Final Call to Arms

A green slouchy was I, who joined the corps
Born Australian, I soon learned about the war
Kit pristine, weapons at the ready
A unit, a captain, a group who were steady
I met a bloke on the eve’ of order’s pass
He said ‘oi mate-come join up with us’
It was the first time I got the senior’s nod in
Onward we marched, brash and downtrodden
We buried many of our brothers along the way
We remembered them, always, night and day
Still the mission was the same, the enemy was known
Often starving, cold, sometimes never going home
It was alright, you know, despite all the grim
‘Get up ya bastard and fight’, said the leader of men
Hard at times, unshaven – like dried, uncared-for moss
Of all the names we called him – of all he hated ‘boss’
He said ‘I’m just a bloke like you there mate, just doin’ what I can’
‘Trying to help out others to push our nation’s van’
Too right he saved our bacon, too many times to recount
If a soldier was in trouble, he’d be first gun on the mount
Often a time, he’d find plenty of Indos to calk
T-bagged them all – the callsign of the Hawk
He never called for weapons, a fair dinkum’ true blue
He’d sacrifice his last mag’ to see a young Hawk through
When he retired from his beloved corps, it still ran through his veins
The drumming of a march pass on, the feeling of the flames
The corps went on, though many of us filed discharge
It was too hard without him, the shoes left were too large
He came and went after he handed command over
An Aussie outback legend, an armed, lone land rover
Our earth shattered when news broke – ‘From this life he departed’
We lost our will, our spirit, we fell hard – we fell faint hearted
This is the true story – a cool one – of a bloke known all too well
A smile, a laugh, a yarn online – we all remember swell
When the bugle calls at sundown, we gather with a gin
Our brother, our mate Sam Cougar – We Will Remember Him

I will always remember the legend of Shane as he was the most noble of hard arsed gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, may he be at peace in his Q10 garden : )
