Reelin' In The Years [Top Gun Hacking Scandal]

Reelin’ In The Years Theme Song
Welcome to the 2nd episode of Reelin’ In The Years!
This time we’ll go back to the Top Gun Hacking Scandal on November 5th, 2009.
Top Gun was a respected citizen of the eIrish Community back in 2009. He was an established business and military man which was praised highly by the communtiy. However in November 5th 2009, Top Gun infiltrated the old forums to steal passwords that matched with their eRepublik account. It was during Snakeyes’ and Patton’s election contest. Top Gun was Snakeyes’ right hand man and had a great dislike for Patton at the time.
As like many other elections back in 2009 the past of Patton’s actions in the Romanian PTO was slated and was torn to threads in the eIrish media. This encouraged Top Gun to do whatever means necessary to stop Patton from getting elected. It caused major uproar among citizens as many dead accounts were targeted and semi-active accounts got broken into also.
When the old forums Michael Collins hosted crashed, Top Gun set up a temporary forum. Although those who have registered will have obviously noticed that you got an email confirming your name and password not from a server email, but from a private Hotmail account Top Gun set up. This helped Top Gun see all of your forum passwords and for those who had your eRepublik account with the same password, you were just an easy target.

Election Results
Taken into account of Snakeye’s illegal votes, the actual results should be have been displayed as Patton 173 to Snakeye’s 140. Top Gun was very smart to remain undetected as he used different proxys for each account he logged into and left no trace behind for the admins.
Shortly after Snakeyes’ election defeat to Patton, Top Gun admitted to the hacking scandal when confronted. Top Gun shouldn’t have done something stupid like this as he had the opportunity to do something better for the community rather than go out like this. But what the heck! We all do something stupid in our lifetime!
That’s it for this series and stayed tune for next time!
Cheers for reading,
Ian

Love this series... keep em coming!
401 votes... wow! Although I wonder how many were Multi's back then!
Your link to the Background music doesn't seem to work for me... replace the https with http.... that usually fixes it
Voted
Aye there was plenty of multi armies about back then. I've fixed the link by replacing https to http, should work now.
Brilliant theme tune!
Works perfect now!
The good old days, when the game had everything, mystery, intrigue and a working economy
These are great ian.
Do 'The Shannon Exercise' pls
As Nith is still around that be on the list!
Keep it up Ian. Snake did not know top gun was doing this. I thought it was Digits who caught top gun. Top gun played for another year or two under a diffrent charicter. It was actualy a loss of a good player at the time and one of only two field marshals Ireland had. The shame of this was some people lost there accounts because of this.
I think Top Gun just admitted to it on IRC and that's where Digits found out about it.
Request would be something before my time the Romainin PTO.
There was before my time as well but I've played with BAPS in another game so I have some decent background info.
That *
Top Gun was actually a pretty good guy, this was just a dumb mistake.

Great work Ian.
I heard Top Gun goes by the name of James Keiller these days...
Wait a sec someone kept the name nua phoblacht, I remember I set that up from the old ISD as a protest party for republicanism over communism. It was me and pete sake doing it, those were good times when I actually was a big hitter politics wise, hell the ILP has a quite a bit to thank me for when I taught the noobs political mechanics and gave a blessing for the labour army.
Indeed, Joe. They were good times while people actually listened to us for once!
Loved the article Ian, keep 'em coming please
