LeRoy's Story

LeRoy's Story

My daughter has a hobby keeping parrots. For a while now she has taken on birds that are unwanted from people who don't have the time, patience or the inclination to keep them any longer. Sometimes the birds are a "fixer upper". I have a lot of those stories too.

This is the story of LeRoy, a 10 month old baby Cockatoo.

LeRoy had been bought as a baby for a man for his 50th birthday. Unfortunately, LeRoy and the man never bonded and he didn't have the time, patience or inclination to do much with him. LeRoy did bond a little with his wife. Unfortunately, they very soon were going through a messy divorce and LeRoy was left with their grown daughter, who was too scared to handle him at all and did not want to spend any time with him. LeRoy spent 4 months in a cage outside with no human contact. To make it worse, he was kept on an unhealthy diet of sunflower seeds and very little else.

When we got him, he was scared, defensive, anti social and had a bad habit of ruining anything put in his cage (even more so than other cockatoos that are known for that kind of thing). He also tossed any food immediately to the floor of the cage. 🙁

We've had him about 4 months now. He is now quite social and is loving being on a harness that lets him go for long walks with his favourite human.
