Independence Day!

Day 2,879, 03:51 Published in Ireland South Korea by Don Croata

Today is a proud day for all Croats, including us here in eIreland. The Croatian referendum on independence was held in May 1991, with 93% of voters supporting the independence. On 25 June the Croatian parliament proclaimed the Croatian independence. Seven days later, on 7 July, Croatia as well as Slovenia signed the Brioni Declaration in which the two countries agreed to suspend all declarations and acts passed by the Croatian and Slovenian parliaments related to those states' secession from Yugoslavia for a period of three months. During that time the Croatian War of Independence started.

On 8 October, the Sabor decided to end relations with Yugoslavia, in the Decision on the termination of the state and legal ties with other republics and provinces of Yugoslavia. That session was not held in the House of Parliament but instead in the basement of an INA building, because of the possibility of the repeat of an incident such as the bombing of Banski dvori.

The JNA tried to keep Croatia within Yugoslavia by occupying all of Croatia. After they failed to do this, Serbian forces established the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) within Croatia. After the ceasefire of January 1992 and international recognition of the Republic of Croatia as a sovereign state, the front lines were entrenched. During that time, the RSK encompassed 13,913 square kilometers (5,372 sq mi), more than a quarter of Croatia. In 1995, Croatia launched two major offensives known as Operation Flash and Operation Storm, which would effectively end the war in its favor. The remaining United Nations Transitional Authority for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) zone was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia by 1998.

We, Croats, are both sad because so many people had to give their lives to our Homeland, but we're also proud because their sacrifice wasn't useless. They must be happy watching on us from the Skies, we've built a country on their shoulders and they are the ones we'll remember forever. Croatia had the largest amount of people volounteerly applied to the National Army in the history of wars, that happened after the brutal crimes by Serbian paramilitary Army.

We can thank them for the opportunity to wish everyone a nice day on our Independence day!

Ptico moja mladih krila, visoko mi letiš ti,
Mene zove domovina, slobodna ćeš ostati.

Ne bojim se ja umrijeti, za slobodu i za dom,
Već se bojim kada odem, da ti krila ne slome.

Ptico moja, kad rat prođe, raspast će se okovi,
Tad poleti čistim zrakom, iznad zemlje slobodne.
