The period immediately after Tsushima also saw the IJN, under the influence of the navalist theoretician Satō Tetsutarō, adopt an explicit policy of building for a potential future conflict against the United States Navy. Satō called for a battlefleet at least 70% as strong as that of the USA.(Wikipedia)

Alternative timeline 1918, Battle of Truk naval base; link to Navy account. Our commander (of CiA) has discovered that a lot of the stories we have sorted through are but a cover for a epic fight of cultural honor, as we formulate what transpired, we will go ahead with the Japanese Army view of what happened in there timeline on Truk.

The Navy was active helping the British, our forces were more frequently, being posted for guard duty on naval bases, troubling to officers whose units had come close to a clash of arms with the Naval units. We had only arrived days before, our equipment still in transit, it was a reunion of disturbing coincidences, the officers whose men had surrounded the Naval HQ's in one of many such disputes. We could only look around at the Navy's firepower and wonder at our fate.

On the dawn of our third day, as alarms go off, American seaplanes are everywhere, what are our men to do, as we form up our units and demand orders, we discovered, that the Naval units, were deployed more against us than the invaders. The first wave of boats are ashore and their converted fly-off boat is beaching itself, if not frantically, staging a counter-attack our men would have been awe-struck. The Navy was blowing transports disguised to look somewhat like cruisers out of the water, it seemed surreal, we had our units armed the best we could and launched our attack, sweeping the Americans from there beached fly-off boat, yet we couldn't do anything to stop the Zeppelins (Zeroes) from taking off. The first planes went out after the Navy, but soon some were strafing us, the going was tough, but we were gaining control of the ship deck by deck, only to have amphibious tanks appear on our flanks, as our bullets bounced off, they eerily started glowing pink as if we were angering them.

Our orders were clear, clear the vessel and raise our flag, so the navy would not blow us off the island, I had just received from a runner, the latest update, the Americans had been cleared of their flight deck, though some had holed up in an open hanger and where firing at our Navy, there rouse was to work all to well. I was to lead a charge to clear one of our flanks, the pink crawlers, had no infantry support, though are men were over awed, they were more scared of us, there leaders, only those of us to charge, were spared the our Navy's bombardment.

A retreating hail storm of heavy ordinance, the pink monsters blew about, and our men saw that only flesh and blood ran the machines, but we were no more immune than them. Taking what we could quickly scavenge, we picked what we hoped was a still seaworthy landing craft, as we picked our way through the litter of battle, some claimed to see, Samurai of old fighting with savages on horseback...

Could it be in this timeline that Apaches fought Samaria, to end any debate who was the best archers on horseback?
