[miles] Time
miles247
What importance does a clock hold? Answer lies in importance of time or should I say, passage of time. What does it matter what minute of hour, what hour of day, what day of month, what month of year or what year it is? What are we trying to achieve by measuring time in the end?
Common answer is simple. We are trying to quantify it. It helps us schedule our time, it helps in co-ordination.
When I look at the clock, I wonder whether it is the only thing we are trying to achieve. Clock tells us that time is passing. An information, a warning or an assurance, many ways to interpret that. A warning in the sense that it tells us to stop wasting our time. An assurance in the sense that whatever you are going through is going to pass, no matter how hard a time you are having.
Our mind keeps a clock of its own. It has the capacity to make us live any moment of our past or our probable future for as long as it desires (unless you control it, ofc 😉
). One importance of analytical time is that it ensures us that time is passing, so that we do not go insane by getting trapped into our mind-clock.
I am not exactly sure what I wanted to say in this article. You may unsub on your way out.

I would ask you what your point is, but I'm sure you'd just tell me "I don't know" : P
Father Time is an impressive character in our lives, like our common awesome and totally wasted friend.
He's everywhere, even if we don't see him.
We're all affected by his existence and attribute different levels of importance to it, but he doesn't care, hes just... there and treats us all the same.
We blame him when things go wrong, but we don't praise him when we got everything done. And he doesn't care, he's still around.
He puts no pressure on us, but still makes us panic and go out of our minds. He keeps our brains working on finding out how to act around such a creepy individual that just looks at us with red eyes and a smile while we're going over our heads trying to finish daily tasks.
He gives us no advice on what to do, think or feel, never says a word, but in this total freedom we still learn something new everyday regarding how to take advantage of him. And boy, is he eager for us to take advantage of him!
He's one of those friends you would just hang out with and chill over a drink and a smoke.
The kind you can always love, appreciate or use wisely, but also hate, treat bad or have an unstoppable urge to kill sometimes. But he'll still be there and give you another chance.
And he'll always be around, as he's our permanent companion to the end of the road.
Time is each of us, it's an alter-ego.
Of course, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYiahoYfPGk
Clocks (measure of time) are just human convention and I would ban them from the face of the earth for not allowing me to enjoy my friend.
awesome sunsetter o7
sheer genius of a song ... lyrics to die for. Do listen to the song if you have not already!
My fav - The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Semi-Complete Lyrics (Time by Pink Floyd)
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Right, Ash. Pure genius.
I have another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqvcmud3LFQ
Everything about High Hopes yells "time":
The video is overwhelming, describing a static motion of life going by.
I've always associated the bells on the background with time. They're present before the song starts and they keep their rhythm all through the song (if you listen carefully they don't fall on any measure of the other instruments), only to be the only element that remains after the song is over.
It yells "time" because you can see a difference from the Time above. That means they've grown somehow, now they're looking at things from the perspective of someone who's been through everything and now they've reached the end of the road. They're having a one-way chat with Father Time. And they're so relaxed and so accepting of everything. No fighting, no remorse. Just looking back.
"Forever and ever" - the best ending to the best song.
OFFTOPIC REPLY PERHAPS : I know high hopes(never took time to understand what it was about to, though - i was never in a mood to think when i played that song - if u know what i mean xD ) & father time is here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxegqv87JhA
Good thing, am gaining some knowledge through music...lol
my favourite song on a related subject would be this, mute the volume and look up lyrics(in description) as you may not appreciate the vocal skills -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHmBYXjUm6A : D
Hehe troj I do know what you mean 😛
As an ardent power metal listener that I am, I must admit that Strato's approach to time isn't quite something I can relate to. I mean in my head there's a discontinuity between the rhythm and the message&theme and it gets translated in a feeling of that they're misinterpreting the notion.
Unlike this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqNwNzGr3To
Anyway, they might be going to some spiritual places that I don't exactly agree with, like born-again christian stuff : P
Here are some examples of this theme being treated in rock songs (just off the top of my head, haven't thought about it too much):

Meh... there are many more, but it takes time to find them and I'd rather just chill with my buddy xD
I don't get it, but then again, it's not like I give a fu*k about time.
lol, i know only that one song of theirs xD and thanks for sharing those few quick links...

Avidya : )
The will to control, measure and organize anything outside us will lead us to the missindentification with that object.
Furthermore, this is the subject of an long time promised talk with Ashwamedh.
Parinama : "The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,"
Time is not something like a diferential function. It is continuous (this should make sense for engeeniers : P )
Still, every little moment, infinitesimal, is different from all the others (by the combinations of guna - those are things that today physics still have to discover : D ) .
So, being the same form a moment to another but also, completely different. This is the time effect on us.
Obviously, the moust of us are not aware about this transformation (in Vibhutti Pada, Patanjali say that the samadhi with this object - time parinama/transformation - gave the one the power to master the time itself - and from this to creation of another Universe is just a step).
So, I dont know what was in your mind to writte this. Nor why all the comentators gave us links to music : P (btw, I also love Pink Floyd) but this is a good topic (as far as I'm concerned).
Best regards !
Interesting.
And exibot that 750 thingy looks interesting. Will try it out.
@ Sunsetter - i looove High Hopes! : )) I think Division Bell is one mind blowing album.
now onto checking out Troj's videos and other comments) : DD
on High Hopes - my interpretation would be ... yes the bell does indicate never ending time but the song seems to primarily signify the end of innocence in the obsessive pursuit of excellence... the High Hopes coming to naught at the end.
@ Troj - man Stratovarius are one super band as well!!! Love Timo's voice and the guitaring is phenomenal. Though I guess my favourite by Strato is probably Paradise. Do also listen to WHite Lion - some really awesome guitaring by Vito (White Lion used to be power metal though mostly ballads)
by the way - this comment on Father Time was too cool 'Who needs religion and church when there's Stratovarius concerts?'
Ensiferum are pretty cool too! : ))
@ Maniu - I have a trcky discussion to have with you - perhaps tomorrow cos today I might possibly have an opportunity to get my daughter sneaked into a rock concert with me and im gonna try : D
See Maniu? That's why all the links to music : )
I didn't feel like I could really add anything to this awesome discussion ... to elaborate, I've read the article and the comments about twice already. Heh Now to oblige Milo ...
Personally I perceive time a bit differently I think. To me its about purpose. Actually to me, all life and all 'dimensions' within it - space, time - is about purpose. To put it simply, asking oneself - Why do I exist in this space, at this time? How do I justify my existence within this moment - and each moment that passes? What do I hope to and in reality, am able to accomplish within the given amount of time that I have?
In short, to use the much used cliche - am i really 'living in the moment' rather than it being just another moment among many that we pass through in our journey of life. Of course - not every moment are we able to 'live' to our satisfaction, but my personal quest, as ever, is to ensure I am able to string together as many of such exhilarating and joyful moments as possible - moments that are neither wasted in frivolity and carelessness nor in over-intellectualizing and sterile seriousness.
@ash ~ points noted about stratovarius! o7
yeah, and that band ensiferum plays heroic folk metal, listening to their music feels someone feel majestic or royally epic(actually, i dont know the right term to describe the emotions or feelings) you may not like the harsh vocals but they made some good music in the past...how good is it compared to the others, well am still trying to find that out...
