What Goes Around, Comes Around
Israel Stevens
I’m certainly not up to speed on our nation’s foreign standing, so maybe this article will be a bit out of line. But Evry made this pretty nifty Foreign Affairs Map, and it looks like we’re not really on the same side as China, so who really knows.
Anyways, I was Secretary of State for Presidents Cerb and Inwegen, as well as having two terms of my own at the helm of this nation. I don’t say that to brag, because I’m certainly the first one not to give a damn about my resume. I say it to point out that I do have a great deal of experience in foreign affairs, just not current ones.
What I’m getting at here, is that watching our allies run train on China, like she’s a cheap two dollar hooker has been extremely gratifying for me.
Seriously awesome
For every ignored PM, empty IRC channel, backroom hoop that we all had to jump through just to get someone in China to answer a damn question, this is a pretty satisfying picture.
Let me explain, for all the newfriends, or people who haven’t been involved in Foreign Affairs before.
Trying to get a response of any kind out of China was one of the most frustrating things in the game. They didn’t answer PMs, didn’t have IRC rooms and were never around to talk with you when you wanted/needed them to be. And this was all while they were a significant military power, and holder of the majority of EDEN’s communes. They were completely isolationist. And all of this, without mentioning how incredibly difficult it was to gain Citizenship.
To complicate matters, the country elected the same dude (Atracurium) to the Presidency 28 times! TWENTY EIGHT! We elected Oblige six times, and most people agree that was 4 too many.
With one dude running the show in China, there was never any change in their communication from month to month. It was just more of the same stonewalling.
The most we knew about him, was a rumour that he went to college in Canada (which was maddening because even the Great FireWall wasn’t an issue) and a few pictures of his desk from ilphen’s amazing deskism article (which has completely broken image links which is a shame all it’s own).
He and the rest of the Chinese Government were ghosts.
Perhaps things have changed. I see that Atracurium isn’t the President this month. Perhaps we have no problem getting in touch with China nowadays. But years ago, when a lot more people played and a lot more people cared about eRepublik, getting in touch with China was a Herculean task.
Watching four nations team up to attack China is a pretty great reminder that what goes around, comes around.

First?
Yeah, Israel if you didn't write an article calling out a country we've been trying to get back on our side for the longest of times.... yeah... that would be great.
China sucks. Not my fault, mate.
I guess I should write a more through post.
China has always had the policy of trying to stay semi-neutral in most of the alliance conflicts. They had a strong regional hegemony over SE Asia which they share with their allies - RoC and their amicable enemies - Indonesia. By not going gangbusters for any particular alliance they're basically allowed to continue maintaining their 100/100 weapon/food bonuses.
Obviously due to those stable bonuses, they are a heavy target for CS seekers and like us, that balance between forig nationals and natives can create a difficult balance for ATO situations - this was demonstrated when Croatia attempted to PTO them earlier this year.
Rather than straight up deny the majority of their applicants and piss people off directly, they've developed a non-confrontational left-handed-turndown approach where they simply don't communicate. This strategy has been largely successful as they've really only been wiped once in the past two years (getting wiped again now for the second time) and both those occupations were over fairly quickly.
here lays a genius politician 😃
Getting wiped is a fairly comprehensive form of complete failure. I'm not sure you can say a strategy is successful when they are in the process of getting wiped right now.
Avruch - I'm saying the only territorial encroachment they've had in their entire history has been getting wiped twice. I'd say that's a pretty good deal success rate. The first invasion force was removed within a month or so and I'd say this current one will get cleared out in equal time.
They were wiped in Summer 2011 (I really thought it was in 2010). This makes for more than 3 years of full boni control. Not two :3
Oblige - you are right - this was the strategy they chose and it suited them for most of the time. China, however, never bothered to make friends. Others would envy them, but would not dare to call themselves friends of the Chinese. Now they'll get wiped and will eventually liberate.
And not get wiped for another 2-3 years 🙂
Bumped
About damn time
Back in the TEDEN days, I recall that China gave all the countries some CS allowance for communes except Cyprus, which only received insults. I personally shed no tears for their plight, xdxd.
\o/
with all due respect to you sir , you have no knowldge about their political stracture
even now with another CP , atra says the final word in their government , but not even now and not in old days , chinese government was not at "one man rule" style , their congress has the superiority power and their congressmen are the real ghosts
you could easily get respond from them if you just know to whom you must talk which I'm not allowed to talk about here
yes they are a hard country to communicate in some ways , but when you find out how to do that m their beacome your best ally ever
So if he only knew who to talk to, it would've been perfectly fine? Except the identities of those people is top secret, so he would have had no way to learn them? Cool story.
as i said there are some difficulties in communicating but thats why they are China !
No shit, Sherlock, hey?
Basically to understand China you need to understand that the power isn't in the Executive - which acts as a mediator / public face or in Congress - but in the party leadership.
/me gives Avruch a miracle berry.
Bitter!
Waaay back, when I worked with Atracurium as SoD/NSC, he was responsive and relatively easy to work with. He had an Eden role then, and it would have been early on in his terms as CP. Chances are he burned out / got sick of Americans or something... because he started out OK.
Can confirm he is also ghosty with non-Americans.
FIST
Israel lets just focus on ending melon scarcity.
I can only join the happy happy joy joy dance.
I always prefer IS's FA over anyone else's.
Wait... You're still around?
Good read. Voted.
To understand the Chinese is to understand penis envy. I don't understand the Chinese.
methinks he doth protest too much
