What A Difference A Year Makes
AoifeNiBhriain
Hello everyone,
A year ago today I was preparing for the final exam which is held in RL Ireland. It is called the leaving certificate and it commands the majority of your attention for at LEAST two years of your life, and trust me, they are not a fun two years. A lot of those years are taken up with the following though:
Here are the basics to it:
There are 11 pass grades (A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3, D1, D2, D3) and 3 fail grades (E, F, N.G.). Many joke that N.G. stands for "natural genius" rather than "no grade"!
In higher level, an A1 is worth 100 points, an A2 is worth 90 and each result decreases by 5 points after that, down to a minimum of 45 for higher level. Similarly, in ordinary level an A1 is worth 60 marks and decreases in the same manner down to a minimum of 5 marks. Fail grades receive no marks
If you choose to sit higher level maths, you get a bonus 25 points so that and A1 is worth 125 marks, an A2 is worth 115 marks etc
You must sit English, Irish and Maths in your first L.C.
6 subjects are counted in your final results
Most students do 7 subjects
I worked incredibly hard for my L.C. so this was my experience with it:
Over the year of torture, you learn to take solace in the little things. It's all you can do to keep your spirits up to be honest! Between teachers giving you mountains of homework and study for in-class tests and the mock L.C. exams, free time becomes a mere myth. You're lucky if you get to see your friends outside of the ice-cold, unforgiving walls of your school. You forget what fun is and all that matters is getting that A1 (highest result you can get). You will cry, you will feel stupid and you will feel like all of your friends are studying more than you. Getting through the L.C. makes you a strong person to be frank!
Then come the exams... I'm not going to lie, they were a hell of a lot of fun. It is a strange thing but you become more relaxed and you just get on with it. It's a two week process in which the more popular subject choices are examined first with the less popular towards the end of the two weekds! These pink (higher level) and blue (ordinary level) papers are then sent off to the State Examinations Comission (S.E.C.) where they are given to the correctors and a marking scheme is drawn up. From here your papers are taken by an examiner and the process begins.
The correcting takes most of the summer and the marking scheme is changed to make sure everyone fits into the bell-shaped curve.
Eventually the day comes in mid-August where the results are released. You go to your school with your tail between your legs hoping you will get the points you need to secure a place in your desired college course.
Overall, I got 6 A1's and a B1 and scored 610 out of 625 points and I got a place in the course I had chosen. Also, I scored in the top .5% in Ireland for my results. It didn't come easily but after a year in college I know all the work was worth it.
One thing every real-life Irish person knows is; during the two weeks of the L.C. we have fine weather! So this year I hope the tradition stays true and I get to experience the relief of never having to do it again!
Thank you all for reading this. If you have any questions about the L.C. please leave a comment and I'll answer it to the best of my ability.
A little gathers to a lot
Yours respectfully,
Aoife NiBhriain

The good oul leaving cert, ugh
Great article o7
I wonder does it count if I comment?
IT DOES
WAHEY! \o/
Show off 😉 If you think having exams when it's nice weather is bad, when I was young, we had what was called an eleven plus test, which decided whether you were clever enough to go to a grammar school or a secondary modern. For various location reasons, I was the only one taking it and all the rest of the buggers were playing cricket right outside the window. I'm amazed I passed with the distraction.
Cricket is boring anyways 😛
Philistine 😃
There are no flies on you, Tatlock! Not one but surprised you passed! 😃
Cricket is a game I never got into though 😛
interesting 😃

I wish you tons of beautiful weather, ice creams in any flavour you like, dancing barefoot in your home or on the grass, singing euphorically to the birds and skies. 🙂
Nice work!
Congrats Congrats Congrats!
Oh I wish I was half the lady you are my dear ♥♥♥
The leaving Cert...brings back actual nightmares I had.
Great result btw!

Congrats for ur results 🙂
Now that u have passed the L.C with good grades what do u desire to study in college or university?
You wouldn't believe me if I told you 😛
Come on 😃
Say something
intresting
Brings it all back. Boy am I glad I won't have to do the Leaving Cert ever again. A lot of people have nightmares about doing the exams up to 40 years later. Forget the "I dreamed I was naked in a public place" dream/nightmare. The "I dreamed I was sitting the Leaving Cert all over again" is an Irish anxiety dream/nightmare.
I wonder did they use the bell curve back when I did the exam? If they did it wasn't discussed openly. The teachers indicated to us that it was marked against a set of criteria where points were given for answers and your total was a % of the possible 100%, with no other modifications (with the possible exception of getting another 10% added for doing an exam in Irish) They indicated that it was certainly possible for everyone to score the top grades.
Thanks for sharing...here's hoping I don't have a an LC related nightmare tonight 🙂
I have no idea how it was marked before. All I know is that the older questions were much more challenging!
I hope I didn't cause you to get a nightmare!
No nightmares, just sympathy for the people who started it today.
Well done!

I still have nightmares about not knowing my schedule for the upcoming classes and missing whole semesters of classes. On top of not knowing what classes I had I then didn't know where they were when I found out.
I have that dream at least once a month.
I have been out of college for 23 years.
Ah damn it! AC, I was hoping they would finish eventually xD
Could be I just am neurotic.

Maybe that's why you were a great MoC. Your craziness inspired fun xD
I don't know, I don't remember it being all that hard to be honest. I mean it wasn't too easy either but I always seemed able to get good marks without feeling like I had done much work.
You're obviously at that level of intelligence too given your amazing results (congrats btw) so I'm not too sure why you say it was very difficult. Maybe because it's still fresh in your mind? It's long enough ago for me now that the pain of it isn't fresh to me anymore
Thanks John 🙂 I suppose because I was repeating I concentrated on every little detail and drove myself mad xD hahah
Fantastic job, my dear !
Congratulations !!!
yawn .... i doubt whether your telling the truth. aofie releases article asking for help with code - krakken release 2 coding articles. aofie dont ever comment in any of them. krakken wonder of he should keep on publishing articles if person asking for help could not be bothered with it.
yes eva some people usually do good in school but most of them also struggle in college with a subject here and there.
also weird tara released article asking for support in referendum and never thanked everyone afterwards. good grades is a good thing it doesn't mean you have good manners..

Hahah I will, don't worry! College keeps me on my feet 😛 thank you!
Well done Aoife.... proof that if you work hard, the results will come!
I'm hoping my results will eventually lead to a career in Tayto Park
