He was a great leader who devoted all of his life to his nation. This nation was collapsed, destroyed by the enemies and with Ataturk's leadership and vision, Turkey was born from its ashes. With his ideas, vision, and principles, he is the biggest inspiration to the new generations.
Rest in peace "Blond, Blue Eyed Giant". You will never be forgotten...

The book deals with the trauma of the Greek-Turkish population exchange and the expulsion of Greeks from Asia Minor. In the preface Sotiriou mentions that she wrote the novel on the basis of the memories of a little Asia Minor farmer named Axiotis Manolis, who had lived the events as an eyewitness. From his perspective, the book is written in first person. The book was (and still is) also very popular in Turkey, probably because, as the author said, "there are no evil Greek and Turk, but only people who are victims and pay dear for it". The book has been reprinted sixty-five times in Greece and translated into six languages, including Turkish in 1970 and French in 1996

The population exchange was a mutual decision by Greece and Turkey. Turks in today's Greece and Greeks in today's Turkey have been sent to their homeland to prevent retalliations.
Ataturk is a leader that did not step foot on the Greek flag when it was layed down before him after the conquest of Izmir. He said, "a flag is the pride of a nation, an honorable man must never step foot on it."
So sad that his Greek colleague did not have the same virtues when Greeks invaded Izmir though.

in 1916 turks with the help of USA if i recall correctly decided to send away all greeks
in 1919 it was time for "megali idea" , of eleytherios venizelos who though that with the help of french and english he could conquer agyra.
in 1922 both nations decided for population exchange.
but instead of a population exchange there was a slaughter and the burn of smyrna/izmir.
kemal though did not give such an order but he let it happen (the reason we do not like him)

US was the part of the Allies (Entente) during WW1. So they were the "enemies" of the Turks, they did not collaborate to expel Greeks or whatever.
Yes, Greeks' megalo idea had cost them their "Asia Minor disaster", thanks to the Turkish Independence Movement. The invadors were successfully expelled, even though they had enormous aid from imperaliasts.
The fire of Izmir/Smyrna, was done by the retreating Greek soldiers. It was kind of a "scorched earth" tactic, since they knew Turks were going to take the city, they burned it down and jumped on to their ships.
Ataturk was furious that the fire could not be stopped in 2 days and most of the city was burned.
Why would Turks burn that city, when they were %100 going to capture it ?
