Film 2013...with Wook [Issue 1]

Movies with Wook

I love films, but don’t we all? I don’t go to the cinema much these days, mainly because it’s so bloody expensive and to be honest the delay between a film’s premiere and it appearing on Sky is so short these days. Gone are the days when I would expectantly wait for a couple of years for the network premiere of the latest movie extravaganza on ITV at Christmas...now Sky have the films within a few months it seems.

Favourite films?

Everyone has a few films that they class as their favourites. In these articles I’m going to reveal some of the celluloid masterpieces that I love, some of them are classics and some are lesser known movies...but hopefully they’ll all be ones you might go and check out if you’ve not seen them yet.

Passport to Pimlico

Don’t get turned off immediately...yes, it’s in black and white, but no it is definitely not boring! This Ealing comedy features many great British actors of the 1940s and ‘50s and is a great example of British spirit and community. The plot revolves around an old charter that comes to light that declares that the area of Pimlico in London is in fact not part of the UK, but legally part of the Dukedom of Burgundy in France.

The local residents of Pimlico revel in their new found status as Burgundians, especially so when they work out they’re no longer obliged to follow British laws such as rationing and alcohol licensing, meaning late night knees-ups, rolling out the barrel and all that!

A great film to watch on a quiet Sunday afternoon and one you’ll always remember.

Aliens

The second instalment of Sigourney Weaver’s battle with the acid for blood aliens is a rip roaring ride through a science fiction nightmare of blood and guts, Weyland-Yutani lies and corporate greed and some big guns.

Whilst the first film by Ridley Scott is a superb entry into the world of the ‘aliens’ it doesn’t pack as big a punch as James Cameron’s 1986 sequel. The introduction of a bunch of testosterone fuelled marines, an alien queen and some absolutely terrifying special effects (even now they stand up well) allows “Aliens” a position as a top notch example of all that make the science fiction/horror genre great.

If you’ve never seen any of the “Alien” films then the general gist of the plot is there are alien monsters, that use humans (or any other living creatures) as places for their parasitic larvae to mature before they burst out of the host, killing them in a very extreme manner. In this film the marines are sent to investigate the loss of communication with a colonist outpost in deep space and eventually have to try and kill the ‘aliens’ which have wiped out the settlement...something that proves rather tricky to accomplish.

The banter between the marines is reminiscent of Vietnam war films such as “Full Metal Jacket” and “Platoon”...the Vietcong being replaced by brutal, xenomorphic aliens. What more could you ask for?

The Secret of my Success

The last of the films I’m bringing to your attention today is by no means Michael J. Fox’s best outing. However it is a real feel good film and in fact is simply a good example of cheesy 1980s American cinema. Whilst not being a match for “Back to the Future” for example, this film is one I have watched far too many times to count and is one I would recommend if you simply need cheering up and love some old fashioned comedy moments.

The story centres around Fox’s character, Brantley Foster, who ends up working in the mailroom at his uncle’s company in New York City after graduating from Kansas State University. Amidst much slapstick, bawdy sex farce moments and a lot of mistaken identity scenes the plot moves on with Fox attempting to do two things. Firstly make a name for himself in the business world and secondly to get into the pants of the lovely Christy Wills (Helen Slater).

She had hair like marble...and nipples to match!

Helen Slater is of course better known as Supergirl...oh yeah...

Anyway I hope this article will bring to light a couple of new films you might watch in the future and I’m sure I’ll return to this theme again.

Is he finished yet?

Ah, no....sorry...whilst I’ve got you here, why not take a look at the Independent Alliance? We’re a party for the people where every decision goes to a vote of the party members. If you’re not yet in a political party or just fancy a change...think about the IA. We’re fun, honest guv.
