A Tribute to Great Champions

Day 656, 17:03 Published in Ireland Ireland by John Gormley

As much as it pains me as a Corkman to say it, I must say that Kilkenny are an incredible team. I want to congratulate them on their magnificent win today. It was one of the greatest games of hurling I have seen in my life.
I thought towards the end that Tipperary might sneak it. They had really dominated the second half and were 3 points up. I thought that if they got 1 more point, the 2 score difference might make it a bit more comfortable for them and that would be the difference. Kilkenny however got the next point to keep in touch and then struck the killer blows of the 2 goals.
To win 4 All-Ireland titles in a row is an absolutely staggering achievement for any team for any county and they deservedly will now go down as one of the great teams. What proves their mettle is the manner in which they were challenged today more than in the previous 3 years and, unusually, made to look vulnerable but still managed to come good and win the title. They are great hurlers and men.
Unfortunately the presentation of the cup was quite farcical but we won't let that overshadow this achievement whatsoever. It was truly brilliant and that's all I have to say.
