Goodevening eRepublikans,

As you might have already noticed The Plato has announced that we will have a "resources tournament" where your country has the option of choosing what resources it will have.

This event, if executed properly, could be a benefit for all countries

Your historical capital will have a fish bonus. This means that this region will be useless as a bonus to all other countries unless they require it to build a transport route to other, more valuable regions. For many countries this ensures that they will have at least one region liberated.

A bad thing about this update is that their is no limit to the amount of different resources that a country can have. I.e. USA has 50 regions, so it can acquire 15/15 in its core regions. Also, countries with 1 region such as Uruguay or Singapore, well they can't win anything.

The most valuable industry is weapons, food is 2nd most important and houses are the least valuable because they provide no true benefit. Over 6 months ago they first introduced houses and we have yet to see Q6 and Q7 houses which would provide any actual reason to have a housing industry. Until Q6 and Q7 houses become available with their extra energy recovery you do not need houses.

Think of it this way - all of your players have food companies, most of them have weapon companies and only a few of them have house companies.

In your country you might choose to get 100% food instead of 60% weapons and 40% food. Of course keep in consideration that your neighbors might want your bonuses and will attack you at some point if you have everything they need.

I will analyze briefly strategies that you can take depending on your country.

I will first take the side of a weak country.

I will use France as an example.

We all know what having 2 rubber regions has meant to France - that they have been perma-wiped for years. It would be a huge mistake for France to get a Rubber region (or Saltpeter, or Granite, or any other valuable region that USA, Poland, Serbia, etc would want).

If France does make the mistake and get a high value region such as Rubber or Granite they should place it strategically on their eastern borders, so that it would be closer to Poland or Serbia and they wouldn't get perma-wiped.

Mirror your neighbours.

For instance if your i.e. Germany, and if you have something that Poland wants, eventually they will get it. So if Poland selects OIL then Germany should also select OIL. If Poland selects IRON then Germany should select IRON and place it next to the OIL region, that way Germany has created a core of regions that are useless to Poland. If Poland selects rubber do not take iron thinking it is not valuable - Poland will not select iron since they know that they will just take your region.

I will now take the position of a extremely weak country such as Switzerland, South Korea, Czech Republic, etc.

If you have 3 regions, do as above, that is you can mirror your neighbor but you can also seriously consider turning your country into a "resource wasteland". I.e, pick FISH for all your regions. Now your regions are completely useless to your neighbors and they will leave you alone unless they want to create a trade route to somewhere else.

If you are a traditionally perma-wiped country you have the option now of one of two things:

1. continuing to have no country and no bonus or
2. have a country but no bonus.

I think the obvious choice is the 2nd one.

Now let's take a look at superpowers.

Okay let's say I'm a strong country and have colonies and can do what I want with my neighbors. I do not fear anybody so I will choose Rubber, I will choose Oil, I will choose saltpeter but I still will need regions from my neighbors. I should RW a few of my colonies before the event starts so that I can have my NE running against them and win easy campaigns.

Let's say for example you have a country with 6 original regions, one them will be fish so you need 5 resource tokens in total. You also have 14 colony regions that are in 3 other countries. You can RW 2 regions in a close colony before the event and start an NE against it. On the first day you attack a region to get a quick resource token and also RW one of the other regions in that country. You get your token and choose rubber, your colony gets a resource token from the RW and chooses, well who knows? They can change it at any time before they get the token. Once you see what their first resource is you can choose to RW other regions to give them more resource tokens or close the war and NE another country instead. If it's obvious that the colony is making their country a wasteland close the war and open the NE on the next country. Of course you will lose the 24 hour waiting period for the NE. But if a country is turning into a wasteland then do not RW more regions there, make sure they don't win another campaign so that in the end they will be forced to take what's left, hopefully it will be better then fish.

Also, this is a circumstance where you should absolutely consider using the "declare war" mechanism and paying the obscene amount of gold required to start several wars so that you can win 2,3,4,5 tokens all at once in the same day.

Also, you should quickly RW all the other regions of your colonies so that they get resource tokens quickly. Okay, let's say they choose something useless like GRAIN, well now you know you don't need to take GRAIN. Keep in mind that their are only *10* extra fish regions that can be chosen by countries, so you have to keep an eye out and see what is being chosen worldwide.

As a strong country you can choose to take all the very rare bonuses and hope that some of your neighbours get the other bonuses you need.

Now we get to the fun part, the "let's punish a country" strategy.

Let's take one of my favorite countries as an example, China. If China doesn't manage to win any RW's or win any campaigns they will get no resource or event tokens (it is not clear if they will get event points from losing an RW). China will be unable to choose resources so the resources assigned to them will be all the garbage that is left at the end. Think how great it would be if China had 5 fish and 10 fruit regions? Justice is served.

IN CLOSING

To all country presidents I will say - this start with a plan, and do not be afraid to change your plan during the course. You never have all the information at the beginning and circumstances change due to outside forces, therefore your plan should change too.

Again, this article is a very brief analysis hoping to give people hints and tips of what to do.

Good luck to all countries, especially Hungary.

Hungary, I hope all of your core regions are rubber.
